Many STI courses encourage teachers to integrate the arts in their curricula while discovering their own creative side. As leaders of STI courses, art and music teachers in Scarsdale and Edgemont have given colleagues a window into what students experience in their classes and provided new classroom strategies applicable to every discipline.

introduction (Sue Luft)
The STI has offered Teacher Book Groups around issues of Race and Ethnicity, studying current texts such as Stamped, White Fragility, and Between the World and me. Over the summer of 2020, the STI offered two sections of a Reflective Practice course on Why Identity Matters with Dr. David Salomon. Teachers reflected on how characteristics of race, ethnicity, gender, and class impact their view of themselves and others.
Introduction (Elyse Tenzer)
The STI has helped teachers build their international network by bringing university professors, journalists, and community members with a focus on international and cross-cultural issues. In recent years, the STI has sponsored teacher-led field studies to China, India, France, and Italy.
Teachers across grade levels have participated in course offerings that cover positive psychology, non-cognitive skills, character strengths, mindfulness, and growth mindset.
The Summit on Positive Education course is an opportunity for faculty already incorporating well-being initiatives to share their work with colleagues. Courses have included Teaching Students with Anxiety, Mindfulness Summer Institute, Educator Use of Psychological Interventions, Managing Emotions in Times of Stress and more. Often teachers report that taking an STI class on any topic improves their self-worth as educator-scholars, builds a sense of community among teachers and encourages the ongoing sharing of ideas.

When the Scarsdale Teachers Institute became a New York State Teacher Center in 1985, a main focus was to enable teachers to be more proficient with computers. The STI has consistently offered teachers opportunities to learn how to integrate technology in their practice.
Most recently, the STI has offered dozens of technology workshops specifically to address online learning, creating online classrooms, using screen recording programs, blogging platforms such as seesaw, functions of the Infinite Campus information system, Microsoft Excel, Schoology and various online assessment and grading platforms.
