The Scarsdale Teachers Institute offers continuous professional education to the faculty of the Scarsdale and Edgemont schools, teachers in other school districts and community residents.
Scarsdale teachers began this program with the belief that the best teachers are alert, open-minded people who continue to learn and to translate their insights into appropriate experiences for their students.
Offering a variety of professional experiences in response to the needs of those working with children, the Institute contributes to an atmosphere of intellectual inquiry that stimulates the staff to continue learning. This professional interaction benefits the students and the staff of the Scarsdale and Edgemont school districts.
Scarsdale and Edgemont teachers also endorse the principle that cooperation among autonomous groups is fundamental to growth and is essential to progress in education. They view the Institute as a laboratory for this principle. Here, various groups of teachers, administrators, and community leaders may work together for a valued purpose.
Financial support for the Scarsdale Teachers Institute is provided by teacher tuition, the Scarsdale and Edgemont Boards of Education and a annual grant from the NYS Department of Education.
Scarsdale and Edgemont Teachers Associations advocate for the principles of professional autonomy and professional collaboration inherent in the highest quality of professional development.
Established in 1938, the Scarsdale Adult School is a continuing education program that offers an enrichment curriculum for lifelong learning. Day and evening courses are offered throughout the year. There is a wide choice of intellectually stimulating, recreational, and skill-enhancing courses and lectures with subjects ranging from literature, history, and music, to computer use, crafts, fitness, cooking, dancing, and bridge. The School is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is open to all adults, regardless of residency.
PT Council, the umbrella organization over all seven Scarsdale PTA units, informs and advises the Scarsdale PTAs as they fulfill their mission of promoting the welfare of Scarsdale students. PT Council sponsors a variety of enrichment programs, speaker panels, and activities for students and their families, in addition to several events that are open to the entire Scarsdale community. PT Council members meet with members of the District’s central office and the Scarsdale Teachers Association to foster initiatives and facilitate constructive conversations between parents and teachers, meet regularly with the Scarsdale administration, attend meetings and forums, serve on committees, and liaise with multiple community-based organizations.
The Scarsdale Teachers Institute is a member of the New York State Teacher Centers. As one of the founding members of the Lower Hudson Teacher Center Network, the STI collaborates and cooperates with other teacher centers to provide professional growth opportunities for the entire educational community.
The STI has also developed ongoing programs with several regional institutions:
Facing History and Ourselves
Since 2003, the Scarsdale Teachers Institute has offered Facing History and Ourselves summer institutes, weekend workshops and ST@C webinars. Facing History and Ourselves has offered a wealth of resources primarily to secondary teachers of Social Studies and English on topics such as the Holocaust and Human Behavior, Teaching Reconstruction, Teaching Mockingbird, and many more. Facing History complements the Edgemont and Scarsdale districts focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
LIU
In collaboration with the STI, Long Island University offers a 30 credit plan leading to certification in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership as well as a Certificate of Advanced Studies. It is a flexible program given on site in Scarsdale or online. The program emphasizes experiences, on-the-job training and basic skills combined with some theory as a background.
Research for Better Teaching (Skillful Teacher)
Research for Better Teaching (RBT) is a professional development organization dedicated to improving classroom teaching and school leadership. The Studying Skillful Teacher STI course examines best practices in the areas of curriculum planning, motivation, instructional strategies, and management. Courses are generally three credits over three weekends, with 1 credit follow up opportunities
New York Historical Society
The STI has offered on-site classes at the New York Society based on current exhibitions. Past exhibitions such as Chinese American: Exclusion/Inclusion, Slavery in New York, and Revolution in NYC allowed teachers to work with museum educators to create classroom lessons as well as preview class field trip opportunities. During the pandemic, the STI publicized New York Historical Society Wednesday and Thursday evening zoom discussions and offered ST@C hours.
