5th graders,
This page will act as a resource for your Immigration project. Follow these directions and use these guidels to organize your work and creete an amazing documentary movie.
In your Social Studies folder, make a new folder called Immigration
Click this link to create a copy of the Immigration Script template for yourself
add your script template to your Immigration folder template
In the Immigration folder make another folder called Immigration Media
this is where you will compile all of the images and videos you collect for your project
Use the Immigration Script to write your narrative. The narrative is the structure and order of the story you are going to tell.
How does your immigration video start, what key points will you talk about, what is the middle, how does your story end, and so on.
Then turn that narrative into a script where you start thinking about exact images to get, exact wording of titles, exact voice over (vo) and things like that.
Making a movie always starts with a document, the video editing component always comes at the end.
Recording an interview is alway a good idea. It allows you to
review the interview at a later date, and as often as you’d like
focus on listening in the moment instead of taking notes
you can take notes on the recording later
allows you to review the feelings, inflection, and tone in the voice of the interview subject
But, as with anything involving someone else, always ask permission to record first. Some people may not want the interview recorded, others may be ok with the interview recorded but don’t want their voice/video in your final project, others may be ok with you using the interview in any way you see fit.
Regardless, always ask permission, and always respect the wishes of the interview subject.
Here is a tutorial on how to use your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch to record an interview ->
If you need to use Google to find images
Search for your keyword (topic, place, etc)

Change Usage Rights to Creative Commons
Make sure you click the image you want so the full size version pops up
Alt-click on the image and Save as
Give it an appropriate name
Save the image in your Immigration Media folder
1 Image or 6 Word rule is in effect
2-4 minutes
Begin and end with 2 seconds of black and silence
Images no less than 2 seconds, no longer than 6 seconds
A project like this is about layering elements to create a more meaningful, textured, story. Text, images, voice over, and music, all work together to create a more engaging final product than you can achieve if you leave an element out. Video production. is about layering elements to create a deeper narrative.
Music should never be higher than 20%
music acts as background that sets the mood and tone of the overall video
music also connects the different sections of the video that don’t have voice over
if you have even a second without your voice speaking then your audience will hear silence. Music helps to smooth those transitions between your segments of voiceover
Pictures represent your topic and what your interviewee went through
no, you may not have the “perfect” pictures but you can find pictures that represent what your story is about
my grandmother came to America is 1913, to Brooklyn, so I have no pictures of that, but I would look for “1913 Brooklyn” pictures or “1913 Ellis Island” pictures to find ones that visually represent things she told me about
if I found a picture from 1907 or 1915 that represented what she talked about I would use it, since it was of the same era
As a reminder, many of your questions can be answered in the various sections of this page. Yuo can also refer to the Immigration Project document your teacher shared with you.
