Did you know that there are many fun and interesting ways to continue practicing Spanish even when you’re not in Spanish class? Below are some helpful tips and ideas to help you enhance your listening and speaking skills beyond the classroom.
Make flashcards of vocabulary words we are practicing in class. The flashcards can then be used to play games, such as Memory/Matching, Matamoscas (Fly Swatter Game), guessing games (i.e.: Guess the secret card someone is holding) and more!
Greet someone! Then, ask him/her what his/her name is (Say: ¿Cómo te llamas?) and how he/she is feeling (Say: ¿Cómo estás?). Be sure to introduce yourself as well! Say: Me llamo...
Play games that we play together in class with your family and friends. You may want to play: Simón Dice (Simon Says), Charades, Pictionary, Go Fish, Telephone, etc.
Try to identify and describe items we have learned the vocabulary words for in Spanish. Think: Color, Size, Shape, Quantity, etc.
Count various items around your house in Spanish. See how high you can count to!
Listen to Spanish music! If you like Pop Music, Rock Music, Contemporary Music etc. in English, you will probably enjoy it in Spanish as well! Some popular Latin artists include Shakira, Marc Anthony, Maná, Santana, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias, and Juanes.
Watch children’s shows in Spanish (i.e. Plaza Sésamo, which is the Spanish version of Sesame Street)
Listen to/watch the weather report in Spanish.
Look at artwork or visit (virtually) a museum that has artwork by Latin artists. Try to describe the art to a friend or family member using some of the vocabulary words you have learned in school. Think: Color, Size, Shape, Quantity, etc.
Talk with your Edgewood friends in Spanish even when you’re not in Spanish class. Ask each other about your likes & dislikes. Say: ¿Te gusta(n)...? /Sí, me gusta(n).../No, no me gusta(n).../ ¡Me encanta(n)...!
When at home, you can practice Spanish with your family (including your pets!) by talking to them in Spanish. It’s okay if they don’t understand what you are saying, it is still good practice for you. Maybe you can even teach your family members how to say various things in Spanish!
If you don’t want to practice with your family and/or pets, you can always practice by yourself. You can use puppets/stuffed animals/action figures/dolls, etc.
*Remember, every little bit helps! ☺
