I was born in San Francisco but moved to Imperial Beach in the winter of 1977 when I was in 4th Grade. In fact, my current classroom (Room 34) was my 4th Grade classroom as a student at what was then known as, "Imperial Beach Elementary School." One of my favorite stories to share with my students is that I actually won my 6th Grade Spelling Bee at IBCS in 1980. So when the kids ask, "Does spelling count?", I like to speak of the newspaper clipping (that I share on Back-to-School Night) showing me and my winning ribbon from that event. I suppose my love of Math came from my dad who was a Civil Engineer here in Imperial Beach and gave me the opportunity to work with him right out of high school. Although it was challenging, I realized that I had a passion for working with numbers and couldn't wait to do more with it. Having grown up here locally, I feel that my students can connect with me since many of them will be headed down a similar "IB" educational path that I took.
After graduating from Mar Vista High School in 1986, I attended California State University, Los Angeles for my Bachelor's Degree and then Azusa Pacific University for my Teaching Credential. Once I obtained my Math Authorization Certification in 2018, I became a full-time 7th Grade Math Teacher. This will be my 13th year at IBCS (9th with Middle School).
I love Math and everything that deals with it. I know that many kids come to me with a fear of it or just a general feeling that they can't do it. So it's my job to convince all kids that, not only can they do it, but they can accel at it every day! Each year brings its share of challenges and my goal at the end of the year is to leave my kids "better" than they were when they came to me. One of my heroes was Garfield High School Math teacher, Jaime Escalante who famously claimed in the movie, Stand and Deliver, "Math was not made to be easy, it already is!"
When I'm not crunching numbers, I love to travel with my family, exercise, play board games and listen to 80's music. I also enjoy handing out sports cards to my students as a "positive classroom incentive", as well as, donate cards to my colleagues so they too can get their students excited about the hobby!
I hope you have a spectacular year in 2025-2026 and remember...."Everything in Math is a pattern!"
My 8th Grade picture from Mar Vista Junior High School (circa 1982).....yes, I had hair!
