- Research the setting (time and place) of the novel and record your findings. Generate new questions based on your research.
- Employ cognitive strategies in order to "close read" significant passages of the text.

- Read nonfiction texts that connect by topic or theme to The Outsiders. Annotate the texts with cognitive strategies. Write in response to prompts. Assess your own comprehension with reading quizzes.
- Practice formatting and capitalizing titles correctly. Use this practice to correctly include titles in your writing.
