Learning Objectives

  1. Research the setting (time and place) of the novel and record your findings. Generate new questions based on your research.
  2. Employ cognitive strategies in order to "close read" significant passages of the text.
  3. Keep track of your reading progress on your #BookLove Reading Log.
  4. Read nonfiction texts that connect by topic or theme to The Outsiders. Annotate the texts with cognitive strategies. Write in response to prompts. Assess your own comprehension with reading quizzes.
  5. Practice formatting and capitalizing titles correctly. Use this practice to correctly include titles in your writing.

Common Core State Standards

RL 7.1 Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

RI 7.2 Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.

RL 7.3 Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).
