After reading Balloons Over Broadway, SWBAT construct a small scale balloon float.

Fairy Tale Mock Trials:

Use different fairy tale books to develop and understand the characters to create and embody the characters in a mock trial setting.

STEAM build fairytale character’s costume.

We will incorporate the justice system to connect with 4th Grade Social Studies with the hopes of having a lawyer join us to discuss courtroom procedures.

Possible Units for Grades 5 & 6

STEAM challenge unit- we have collected a list of various project based STEAM tasks and will have the class vote on which ones they want to do / which order to complete it in (all picking from the same list but voted on so they reflect student interest).

BE THE TEACHER- Students will be tasked to design a lesson to teach an audience of their choosing. They will learn about learning styles and lesson planning (including anticipatory set, teaching point, active engagement, assessment..etc.). In order to do this, they will pick a subject that they want to learn about and research it in a guided release approach. Students will practice their teaching on our GT class but we will also coordinate with other teachers to provide the opportunity for them to teach real children.

THE GIVER - CREATE YOUR OWN UTOPIAN SOCIETY PROJECT- I am sure you remember this one (that didn't get to be fully done due to the pandemic). For this, the Long and Smith GT teachers will need copies of The Giver. I will only have about 5 extra. Students will read The Giver at Home and we will hold a book discussion group in school when we meet. As we read through the book, students will learn about various aspects of society and make choices about what should be in that of their own and ultimately question if the perfect society even exists.
