Mind Your Manners: Digital Citizenship


Introduction

Welcome to Module 2!

Last week we explored our unique digital worlds. We were amazed at how many different digital tools, websites, games, and devices are available at our fingertips. Many of you spend much of your day using these technologies. This week we will explore how to use all these wonderful new technologies and web-based platforms while staying safe and secure and acting with respect. Let's find out what digital citizenship means?

Objectives

  • Given specific examples of digital citizenship, students will determine strategies for appropriate online digital citizenship.
  • After research and online tutorials, students will define digital citizenship.
  • Given specific online communication examples, students will identify and utilize positive online communication skills.
  • Given access to the Internet, students will research online safety precautions.
  • Given access to Glogster Edu, students will create digital posters displaying information about digital citizenship.
  • Given a procedures task list, students will embed their digital posters into their digital portfolio.

Our Digital Worlds: The Ups and Downs

Now that we discussed some of our favorite tools and websites, think of these questions before viewing the video below.

  • Are you part of a social networking site?
  • Do you use social networking sites at least three times a week?
  • Do you use the Internet to communicate with friends?
  • Do you use the Internet to play games with others?
  • Do you use the Internet to post creative art?
  • Have you had something good happen to you from using the Internet?
  • Have you come across any problems from using the Internet?

The Upsides and Downsides of our Digital life

Reflection: What does it mean to be a good digital citizen? It is important we are respectful and responsible within offline and online communities as a step towards learning about the characteristics of good digital citizens.

Participate in the Digital Citizenship Discussion in Google Classroom. Answer the following questions.

  • Write your own definition of digital citizenship.
  • What were two things that stood out to you from the video?
  • Name two examples of good digital citizenship?
  • Name two examples of poor digital citizenship?
  • In what ways do you show good digital citizenship?

Post you initial response by Wednesday and replies by Friday, so we can use this information for our online interactive poster creation using GlogsterEdu.

All discussions will be graded using the Discussion Rubric.

Assignment 2

Create an online poster about digital citizenship. What is digital citizenship? Why is it important? What are some examples of good citizenship? This is not a rigid assignment, so be creative. Use the checklist to ensure required elements are included, but the message is up to you. Have fun!

Step 2. Use the Glogster Tips Checklist.

Step 3. View the Glogster Rubric for grading expectations.

Step 4. Login tot GlogsterEdu using the credentials provided to you by e-mail.

Step 5. Create and publish your poster.

Step 6. Post the link to your published log in the Glogster Discussion Forum and view and comment on at least two classmates glogs. What did you learn from their glog? What did you like about their glog? Are their any errors or areas that need improvement? Mind your digital manners by being respectful with all replies.

Step 7. Post the embed code of your Glog into your digital portfolio Digital Citizenship page.
