Introduction

Welcome to Digital Citizenship: Online Course!

This course is designed to enhance safety and netiquette skills of today's middle school learners immersed in a digital world. This course will prepare students with the ethical skills for appropriate online interactions.

Students will utilize various digital tools to enhance their learning. All projects will be web-based allowing for a student to work completely online from anywhere they have Internet access. At the end of the course, each student will have created a digital portfolio communicating their learning through published projects, thoughts, and communications.

For many of you this is the first experience you will have completing instruction through a web-based classroom. Please do not feel overwhelmed with this new platform for learning. We have the best of both worlds for this online course. We will have the ability to have most of our assignments and learning completed through our Google Classroom. We also have the opportunity for face-to-face instruction and discussions, since our course log in will take place in the safety of our computer lab. I am sure you will find this course both enjoyable and useful towards your future goals.


Objectives

Course objective: Given access to online web tools, learners will be able to demonstrate digital citizenship skills and online safety.

Module Objectives:

  • Given access to weebly.com, students will create a digital portfolio housing learning artifacts.
  • Given Internet access and learning videos, students will be able to define the term "digital world".
  • Given access to weebly.com website templates, students will be able to create a digital portfolio home page.
  • Given access to weebly.com, students will be able to develop a digital portfolio personal introduction.
  • Given a digital portfolio procedures checklist, students will publish their digital portfolio to the Internet.
  • Given a portfolio checklist, students will be able to post their portfolio link to the Digital PortfolioMoodle page.

Assignment 1: Introduce Yourself.

  1. Click on Introduction Discussion Topic in Google Classroom
  2. Write a short (few sentences) introduction about yourself. (Family, pets, hobbies, goals, etc..)
  3. Attach a favorite picture from your Google Drive

Topic: What is a digital world?

Please click to view the video below, Digital Life Animation. Begin developing a visual picture of the digital tools, web pages, technologies, communities, gaming, etc., you utilize often. What is your “digital world”?

Complete a log of your media use for one week . Create a Bar Graph with your results.

Assignment 2. Discussion Forum

  • Go to Google Classroom and answer the Discussion Questions for Module 1
  • Click on the questions
  • Type your answer and post
  • Read two classmates posts and reply to their post by clicking on Reply. Be polite and considerate. Tell them one similarity and difference in your interest. The goal is to be considerate and respectful.

Discussion Questions

  • How do you define your “digital world”?
  • Are digital environments and tools a (big part, little part, etc) of your life? Explain.
  • What are your favorite and least favorite things to do with digital media? (Games, social networks, You Tube, iTunes, etc.)
  • Do you communicate with others using digital tools?
  • What digital tools do you wish you could learn to use?

All discussions will be graded using the Discussion Rubric.

Assignment 3. Creating a Digital Portfolio

During this course, you will be learning the procedures to develop your individual website that will be used for your school digital portfolio. This website will house various projects you have created for all of your classes during your middle school years. This website will not be used for personal work. However, you can always create another website from what you learned in this class with parental permission always.

For this class, we will be designing our site, creating a home page and a page for our Digital Citizenship Projects. This week you have two parts to complete.

  • Design your website using a Weebly Template.
  • Create an introduction to your Digital Portfolio without putting last names, phone numbers, addresses, or person e-mail.

Step 1. View the following Weebly Tutorial to create a Weebly Website. Video below.

Step 2. View the Digital Portfolio Rubric to understand how you are graded.

Step 3. Create you Digital Portfolio Website by using the login directions provided in your e-mail. If you did not receive an email, please inform me immediately. Choose your design template and explore the different widgets available for you to create your portfolio. On the front page of your portfolio, type a one-paragraph description describing your website. Please do not put any personal information, such as, last names, phone numbers, address, or personal e-mails.

Step 4. Post the link to your website into the Digital Portfolio Discussion in the Portfolio Google Classroom Discussion Post so we can all learn from each other and view each others' progress.

Step 5: Message the instructor when all tasks are completed. Click on my name in the participants' list. Click message and type. Click send message.
