Band Camp Begins 7/22 at 9AM!!
Simply put, music plays a part in just about every facet of our lives. Try to think of one part of your life that music can't improve!
Going out to dinner? Background music sets the mood of the eatery and covers up uncomfortable silences.
Having trouble remembering things? Setting facts to music increases retention
Need higher test scores? So far, all studies show that students who participate in music tend to have higher scores
I could go on and on...
Yes! Move on to High School Music!
Music in high school is VASTLY different than music in elementary and middle school bands.
If you LOVED your middle school band experience...
you're still going to love band in HS
You get to play great and more difficult music with your peers.
If you are tired of our amazing middle school bands, I have good news!
The SBHS bands offer you tons of choices,
You get a fresh start,
a very different way of playing music with your friends.
Actually, you need to make time for electives to be more competitive.
The College Board (SAT test, and AP test administrator) identifies the arts as one of the 6 areas students should study in order to be successful in college.
University admissions officers clearly state that students who participate in arts classes continually through high school have an advantage over students who do not when applying for high-end schools.
During the admissions process, universities look for ways in which students stand out. Students who have played for at least 3 years in musical ensembles on their transcript are automatically in this category.
Students who are willing to play in a university's band program are prime candidates for better admissions, earlier course selection, and scholarships regardless of their major.
Having music on a student’s transcript all through high school shows that a student has developed skills in group work, multi-tasking, spatial reasoning, mathematics, leadership, community spirit, and many other areas. These types of skills cannot be found all together in any other class.
Yes, you're right, I do want people in band, choir, and any other music class. Plus you don't have to believe me. Here are some other sources:

A NY Times article titled "Advice from a Dean of Admissions on Selecting High School Courses"
https://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/13/selecting-high-school-courses/
"We admissions officers are fans of students with deep involvement in a few activities. We are not fans of students who pad their list of activities in their junior and senior years to look more engaged."
Our counselors have to schedule over 3,000 students and it's hard to get to know the needs of each one. The counselor probably didn't know how important it was to have band in your schedule. Sometimes it helps when a parent gets in touch with the counselor to fix scheduling problems.
Sometimes the sophomore year is the hardest to schedule, but things CAN be moved around to accommodate band all four years as well as a rigorous AP schedule if desired. It is VERY difficult to take a year off of music and then get back into music your Junior year. Imagine training for a race for three straight weeks, the fourth week you lay in bed all week and never get up. The following week you try to run a race. The results won't be good! The same happens to musical skills and musculature.
If you need ANY help with scheduling, please let Mr. Fortino know. jfortino@sbhsd.k12.ca.us
To adjust your class schedule, please email our Assistant Principal, Ms. Grissom and let her know you want to be in the band! If you need any help, get in touch with Mr. Fortino.
