How Did I Perform My Experiment?

Before trying to perform my experiment, I would need to have certain materials, most of which pertaining to measuring and blocking out the sound. The materials are listed here:

  • A sheet of Cork Underlayment
  • A piece of Foam Board
  • A roll of Mass Loaded Vinyl
  • A roll of Bubble Wrap
  • A Sound Level Meter (To record the sound being emitted)
  • A sheet of Drywall (To set up the boxes)
  • A speaker (For emitting sound)
  • Small Screws (To secure/make the boxes)
  • Duct Tape (To help seal and hold together the boxes)

As soon as I obtained the materials needed to start, I got right to getting the project done, although I was not able to get the cork underlayment or the mass loaded vinyl, I still did the experiment with the three boxes. So I started building the drywall boxes, I had to first cut out the drywall pieces in 16, 1x1 foot squares. The 16 drywall pieces are going to make three boxes, one just drywall, one drywall, and foam, and the last is drywall and bubble wrap. (I just had to make sure I had extra pieces just in case I messed up) I then started on the foam pieces, which had to be shorter because they are going to go inside the boxes. I decided to use both duct tape and screws to hold together the boxes because of how brittle the drywall pieces are. I would need to use the screws as the main thing keeping the pieces together. Duct tape would both seal and hold together the parts of the corners very well, so as to make sure that the edges do not leak out the sound. To test, I had to find a wall to lean the boxes on for easy access to the back so I could take the speaker out with ease. I finally, got the sound level meter ready, and tested with the speaker in all three boxes, with a song of my choice.
