What Material Will Keep Out Sound The Best?

Why Did I Start This Project?

Would you like to know how soundproof your walls really are? I will be testing which materials prevent sound waves from going through. To see what type of material will suffice to prevent sound from entering, I will use different frequencies to see which frequency can be heard the clearest. I was looking through project ideas for the science expo when I started to hear numerous noises coming from the outside of my study. Upon hearing the noises, I came up with the idea to study sound waves.

Knowing what would be the best for sound insulation would really help me improve studying because I would be able to block out noise, which would in terms help with my grades overall. I could install the material of choice into my drywall or hang on the walls in a bedroom for a better night's sleep and much more things to come. I will be using foam rubber, mass loaded vinyl, cork sheets, drywall, and bubble wrap. I have come to a logical conclusion, that in layers, mass loaded vinyl would prove to be a better insulator, but in terms of just one sheet, bubble wrap would be a great insulator because it has air pockets which can help to keep any music/noises out. Overall I think that bubble wrap will be the best insulator due to the fact that the air inside it will help to diminish the sound coming in/out. I will be testing different types of insulators to keep sound out which will have to be tested in a quiet place, set up with an audio player on one side of the insulator. Testing the materials will have to come down to thickness of the materials, and the quantity. I will be testing the amount of sound that comes through with a sound level meter (SLM).
