Youth Mental Health First Aid is an evidenced based program that teaches you how to identify and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth.
Why YMHFA?
Please take a moment to watch a brief overview of what Youth Mental Health First Aid is about.
Changing the trajectory of our youth...
One in five youth ages 13 to 18 lives with a mental health condition. That means in a class of 25, five students are impacted. Suicide is also the second leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds (CDC 2019 Suicide Trends) 50% of people with mental health issues will develop these conditions before the age of 14. Having a more informed staff can dramatically help early intervention efforts and get youth the help they need when they need it.

YMHFA Connection to Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
There is an ever growing concern about youths’ Mental Health; especially now in Physical Distance Learning and on-going social isolation. 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14; 75% by the time they reach 24 years of age. (National Alliance for Mental Illness). Several of our campuses have students with special needs until 22 years of age. As educators and employees who interact regularly with youth, it is essential to know effective and proven strategies to support students experiencing a mental health crisis.
Self-Awareness
YMHFA will help participants to understand their role as a mental health first aider, being aware of their thoughts and body reactions when noticing a youth in need of support.
Self-Management
YMHFA will emphasize the importance of self-care and community resources to utilize for themselves and students to help stay calm in a crisis situation.
Social Awareness
YMHFA will help participants become aware of warning signs to look for in youth to be able to provide mental health supports or guide them towards supports in the school.
Relationship Building
YMHFA will help provide guidance on how to best connect with youth to build trust and rapport.
Responsible-Decision Making
YMHFA will train participants on how to utilize the YMHFA Action Plan when working with youth who are in a non-crisis and crisis situation.
