About the Department
Established in 1962, the Department of Commerce at SB College, Changanacherry, stands as one of the most prestigious and enduring centres of learning in the region. With a legacy that stretches back before the establishment of the university, the department has been instrumental in nurturing the commercial and academic talent of Kerala for more than six decades
The journey began with Mr. C. K. Jose, the first faculty member, who laid the foundation for a culture of academic rigour. Initially operating under the aegis of the Department of Economics, the department gained its independence in 1963 upon receiving affiliation for its Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) programme. This autonomy marked the beginning of a relentless pursuit of growth, leading to the introduction of the Master of Commerce (M.Com) in 1981.
Today, the department is not just a centre for teaching but a hub for advanced research. Recognised as an Approved Research Centre of Mahatma Gandhi University in 2008, it offers doctoral programmes (PhD) that push the boundaries of knowledge in commerce and finance.
At SB College, we believe in equipping professionals for global relevance. The curriculum bridges the gap between traditional commerce principles and the demands of the modern digital economy. Through a blend of rigorous academics, industry interactions, and value-based education, we strive to create not just degree holders, but competent, creative, and socially conscious leaders ready to endure and excel in the global business environment.
