We will use Google Classroom throughout the semester. Students should check there for daily reminders, announcements, due dates, and assignments.
"Close the DOOR. Write with no one looking over your shoulder. Don't try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY. It's the one and only thing you have to offer."
Barbara Kingsolver
COURSE OVERVIEW
You will no longer be a solo writer, but instead part of a COMMUNITY of writers. This means that your time will be spent writing and discussing works (both our own pieces and published) of various genres and styles.
You will also participate in exercises meant to free your mind and get you thinking outside the box. Throughout this course, you will grow by exploring new territories and taking chances.
This class involves a great deal of self-discipline, motivation, and maturity.
You will be graded on polished pieces, class participation, and preparedness.
If you are unable or unwilling to put forth effort, please consider taking a different elective class.
Be ready and willing to write on a daily basis
· Experiment with new ideas, topics, and styles of writing
· Read and respond thoughtfully to the writing of your peers
· Revise your writing and improve editing skills
· Share your writing aloud or through Google Docs
· Build a writing portfolio
ABSENCES
If you are absent, contact and communicate with me to discuss assignments and due dates. COMMUNICATION IS KEY!
CLASSROOM PROCEDURES and CONDUCT
Above all else, conduct yourselves with integrity. Have respect for yourself, others, and the space we are in.
Come to class ready to roll. Upon your arrival, look for your “Do Now” task on the screen.
While the class is in writing mode, it will remain quiet so that everyone can concentrate. While the class is in sharing mode, you are expected to be attentive and respectful.
When we are writing, you are expected to WRITE – don’t sleep, disturb others, play on your phone, or sit and do nothing. (These things have actually been tried in this class! :) )
When a substitute is present
Treat them with respect. Kindness and understanding go a long way. Your job is to do the work that has been left for you and be productive in my absence.
Consequences for disruptive/disrespectful behavior include
Warning, seat moved, removal from class, referral, phone call home, etc.
