Hello first grade families! We miss your children and hope that everyone is healthy and safe. We know that this is not an ideal situation for our learners, yet we are here to help support you the best that we can. This learning is not reflective of a typical school day, and we are trying to make the most of this unexpected situation.
We recognize that family schedules may not coincide with regular school schedules. Our goal is that learning opportunities are taking place four days per week. You will see that for each day, there are required and optional assignments. Every day should include time to play and time with family. Remember that structure is important for all ages, and creating a consistent routine that works for your family will be most beneficial. If you need suggestions, do not hesitate to ask!

Important information for our remote learning:
Reading: At this point, all of our reading instruction and assignments are digital. We are utilizing the online platform www.kidsa-z.com to learn, practice, and assess reading fluency and comprehension. This website also allows students to build their skills with sight words, word families, and vocabulary. I have e-mailed student login information to families. I look forward to us learning this new resource together!
It is important for your student to read aloud to an adult or older sibling, as our young students will need support in the reading process. A typical reading group lesson begins with a picture walk, previewing vocabulary, reviewing reading strategies, and making predictions. While reading, support your child by being an active listener. When your child encounters an unknown word or makes a mistake, allow him/her to complete the sentence to have the opportunity to self-correct. Please refer to the "Reading Strategies" handout included in green folders for your reference as well as the "Reading Strategies" video that I made and posted on Seesaw. Ensure that time is allocated afterward to discuss the story, including sequence of events, characters, problem and solution, and main idea with details.
Math: This subject will continue to be blended with some online and some traditional paper components. Teachers are creating videos to help introduce new concepts for most lessons, and we will be using Pearson online to access the videos that your child would normally view in class. Your child's login information is the same as that he/she uses to sign in on school computers. Since students' entire math journals have been sent home, you will no longer see stapled paper packets. Families are responsible for locating the lesson within the journal and completing it on paper (each lesson is two sheets of paper, both of which are double-sided). At times, Pearson online will be utilized for assessment purposes, and some digital components may be required on Seesaw as well. We will also use IXL as well as the review packet that was sent home in orange folders as part of our second packet pickup. It is important to check the math cover sheet to follow the schedule for each day.
Writing: Because of the importance of developing good handwriting, this subject will be continue to completed solely on paper. We are now beginning instruction on our new fact writing unit. Mondays will remain grammar review days, and Thursdays are now choice writing days. For choice writing Thursdays, students can free write or select any previously assigned activity (sequence, letter, or opinion writing) to complete. Remember to complete only one activity each day and to follow the schedule. For each assignment, refer to the writing checklist to ensure high-quality work that meets expectations.
