Cursive is part of the 3rd and 4th grade curriculum. The goal of cursive writing at BES is to provide students with an alternative method to express themselves. Some students do better with the continuity of cursive as they “lose their place” when writing in print. The connectedness of cursive eliminates this issue. The life skill of a cursive signature is an important component. The writing process meshes with the reading of cursive. Language in the real world is often in different fonts, cursive being one. The ability to read cursive goes hand in hand with the writing of cursive. The bigger picture happens neurologically. When we introduce cursive it expands brain function overall, lighting up more circuits and making connections among other neurons. There is also a component on the high school NECAPs that requires students to write in cursive.
