ISS - In School Support

Room 102

If a student is assigned an ISS, they will spend the day in Room 102. Their teachers will supply them with work which they are expected to complete. Academic assistance is available for any subject and in many cases their teachers are available during their prep periods to explain the work assigned or give additional instruction. Lunch will also be spent in Room 129.

Suspension - From the CMS Parent-Student Handbook (page 18)

In-School (ISS) and Out-of-School Suspension (OSS)

When all other methods of discipline have failed to bring about the desired change, or in cases of extreme misbehavior or flagrant disrespect, the student MAY be assigned an in-school or out-of-school suspension. We prefer to always have our students in school. However, there are situations where an OSS is a more appropriate consequence. Under normal circumstances, a student will be suspended for one day for a first offense and two or more for a second offense. Repeat offenses could result in expulsion.

In all cases for re-admittance to school, at the termination of the out-of-school suspension period, the parent or guardian and the student must meet with an administrator. Students are responsible for making up missed school work during the term of their out-of-school suspension. The length of the third or subsequent suspensions will be determined by the middle school administration. In a serious case, even for a first suspension a student may be suspended for up to ten days and/or referred to the superintendent’s office. Matters involving violations of the law shall immediately be referred to the appropriate police authorities. The administration will cooperate fully in providing information necessary for a proper police investigation.

Due Process

 Every student is entitled to due process.

 Every student will be allowed to hear the charges being made and to discuss the incident with either the principal or an assistant principal.

 Parents/guardians are notified when their child is assigned a suspension.

 A student who is accused of an offense for which he/she may be suspended is given an opportunity to hear the charges made against him/her and state his/her side of the situation.

 The administration shall make every effort to determine the facts of the situation and make a fair and reasonable judgment based upon these facts and the school’s regulations.

 After “due process” has been carried out, the principal (or designee) may alter the discipline code in the best interest of the child.

If, in the judgment of the administrator, a student is to be suspended from school, every attempt will be made to notify the parents by phone and a notice will be sent home indicating the definite duration of the time the student will be suspended. Parents are requested to meet with the administrator, with the student present, before re-admittance to school.

A suspension is considered in effect until the morning of the return date to school upon formal readmittance. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the administrator involved.

Appeal Regarding Pupil Discipline

Parents who wish to appeal any disciplinary decision are encouraged to make an appointment with the administrator issuing the discipline. They may then appeal to the school principal or the superintendent.
