Essential Question(s):

  • Can I write poems?

  • Can I write free verse poems with a modeled example?

  • Can I rhyme when needed?

  • Can I confidently perform or read poetry when desired?

This unit's objective(s):

  • Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

  • Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

  • Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

  • Consult general and specialized reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech.

  • Choose language that expresses ideas precisely and concisely, recognizing and eliminating wordiness and redundancy.*

Week of May 10th- 14th

Friday May 14th

Copy down vocab. notes for poetry. Slides will be posted. Finish anything else you need such as book talk, passion paper, or introduction to poetry assignment.

Thursday May 13th

Go to "How to Write a Limerick" on google classroom. Watch the video & go through the slides. Then write your own limericks to CLEANLY and appropriately roast each other or teachers, or create one about something you don't like, or anything that really comes to mind!! The google slides that you will be following with Mr. Long are on google classroom. Finish anything else you need such as book talk, passion paper, or introduction to poetry assignment.

Monday- Wednesday

1. Finish book talk summative slides. Please make sure you attach the slides to the assignment and hit submit. I don't have a lot of submissions yet. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GIVE TOO MUCH AWAY-- I looked over a few of them and I noticed in the summary you gave away the ending. Remember when I gave book talks I gave you a summary, but I didn't tell you the main parts.

2. Introduction to Poetry assignment. This should take you a few days. There are some questions that go with a few poems and I don't mind if you work quietly with someone near you. When you finish you can share your completed poems with a partner near you, or write more poems.

3. Work on any missing work or reassessments.

4. Read independently.

Email me with questions.
