August/September 2026 News
It is hard to believe, but the new school year has arrived! It feels like it was just yesterday that I was meeting and screening all of the new kindergarten students. Welcome to your child's first year of public school. We plan to make it a fun and exciting year, full of friendships, learning, and new experiences. We have an "open door" policy in our classroom, and we welcome your input and help throughout the year. Here is an overview of what we will be learning in August and September:
In literacy this year we will be using the UFLI Foundations program for reading and spelling instruction. Your child will be learning new concepts (sounds and letter patterns) to build skills in reading and spelling words. We will use the Wonders literacy program to teach your child language comprehension skills such as vocabulary, literacy knowledge, and verbal reasoning.
In Module 1 of our Eureka Squared math program we will be working on numbers to 10. This will include counting forwards and backwards, counting objects in lines and arrays, identifying and writing numbers to 10, decomposing numbers to 5, same and different, and classification.
For science this month we will learn about apples. The children will learn about how they grow and we will also take a field trip to the apple orchard (more information to come). The five senses will be introduced, and we will talk about fall as it arrives and the changes it brings.
The first thing that we will discuss with the children in social studies is respect for one another. We will learn about the classroom and school rules and go over the all-important "Golden Rule." We also have a social-emotional learning program (SEL) with weekly lessons that revolve around compassion, kindness, and tolerance. Lesson 1 starts with “We are Special.”
We look forward to a fun and exciting school year! Please call, e-mail, or come see us anytime you have questions.
