Portsmouth High School has engaged in a thoughtful and intentional review of its practices related to class rank and grade point average (GPA). During this time, school leaders and staff have carefully studied current research, reflected on student experiences, and examined how grading and ranking systems impact both learning and postsecondary opportunities.
This work included gathering feedback from comparable local high schools, as well as consulting directly with college admissions representatives to better understand how GPA and class rank are interpreted in the admissions process. By looking at both regional practices and higher-education perspectives, Portsmouth High School sought to ensure that any updates are academically sound, equitable for students, and aligned with evolving college admissions trends.
The result and changes below are a set of carefully considered updates designed to more accurately reflect student learning, support student well-being, and provide families and colleges with meaningful and transparent academic information.
