School Expectations - Yes, you know how to meet school expectations as well. You can work well with others. You take responsibility and respect others' property. You often make healthy and safe choices and also sometimes have a cookie with a glass of milk or make a loaf of bread to share with friends at lunch. YOU will do fine in the greater world. I know - I have seen you all grow so much over the last year. Congratulations!
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS
Be mindful of your behavior and choices. Stay organized and be prepared for class.
WORK WELL WITH OTHERS
Collaborate and communicate effectively. Show kindness and respect in all interactions.
RESPECT PROPERTY
Treat school and personal belongings with care. Appreciate and protect shared spaces and resources.
MAKE HEALTHY AND SAFE CHOICES
Take care of your physical and mental well-being. Follow rules and laws to ensure everyone's safety.
Grades are just one point in displaying progress as you grow and learn. They are a tool for communicating but not the main goal. The main goal is learning and growing. Remember grades are just one type of feedback about learning; you will receive all kinds of feedback about your engagement and learning achievements.
Grades will be calculated in the following manner:
Homework & Responsibility 10%
Homework will not be given simply as busy work. I recognize you all have activities and interests outside of school and want you to enjoy those as well. When homework is assigned, it will be to practice the skills and content we are learning independently, study for an upcoming assessment, to prepare for an activity the following day(s), or to complete unfinished work from class. When assigned, completing your homework shows that you are prepared and will help you as you progress through your educational path.
Formative Assessments 40%
Formative grades (40%) will be applied to those assignments and activities that you do while forming knowledge (during the learning process). Formative assignments and activities are used to help you learn.
Summative Assessments 50%
Summative grades (50%) account for half of your grade and assess what you know and are able to do after you have been taught the material and have had a chance to apply your knowledge and skill sets that you gained through the learning process.
Re-submission of work
From time to time students may find that they struggle with a particular concept or assignment, and may need an additional opportunity to demonstrate growth. If there is a particular summative assessment the student did not perform well on, and they would like a chance of improving their level of proficiency, the student will need to see me either during Skills or we can arrange some time before or after school for extra help or make-up work.
Please see me to make a plan and schedule time to improve.
Absences and Make up work
Submit absent work the day you return with ABSENT written atop or in Google Classroom so that it may be graded.
Make-up any work you missed while absent within one week’s time.
Regularly check your missing work on PowerSchool so that you have an accurate idea of your standing in class.
If there are extenuating circumstances with due dates or late work, please speak with me so we can work out a plan. I am here to support you.
Writing
Writing is an integral component to social studies. Students will be asked to write regularly throughout the course. This will occur through a variety of means including: responding to text, summarizing, analyzing and supporting conclusions while citing evidence, essays, document-based questions (DBQs), etc.
