This unique program combines independent reading with collaborative student-staff discussions during CAVBlock.
Participants read both suggested titles provided by the Library and self-selected works.
The goal is to empower students to expand their reading while also having the opportunity to directly influence future curriculum choices.
Readers Review promotes reading materials to the school that are relevant, engaging, and meaningful to the student body.
"Classic" literature shouldn't be static - each generation has defining works that deserve academic consideration. Readers Circle helps identify those emerging classics that speak to the emerging generation while still offering the depth and quality needed for meaningful classroom discussion.
Readers Review Circle benefits HBHS in several meaningful ways:
Student Voice & Ownership - Students are more invested in their education when they have a direct role in curriculum choices because their perspectives are valued. Teachers also gain insight into what resonates with current students, while students gain an appreciation for classic works when they understand the selection rationale.
Literary Diversity - Students can explore writing styles, human experiences and perspectives, and authors/traditions that might otherwise be overlooked in traditional reading lists.
A Reading Community Culture - Student recommendations create more authentic enthusiasm than when selections come solely from teachers. Also, the shared experience of reading and discussing literature creates connections across different social groups and grade levels.
Real-World Critical Skills - Students develop evaluation criteria, articulate arguments for inclusion, write persuasive recommendations, and navigate group decision-making processes. Analysis for curriculum suitability requires deeper evaluation skills than standard book reports or discussions.
