The Class Participation and Curricular Concert Policy of the Performing Arts Department
Class Participation
As a performance based department, participation is critical to success in our classes.
Participation is graded daily, then codified, averaged, and reported weekly.
Class Participation Points (10)
5 points for attending class
5 points possible for participating in class
Participating is defined as:
Class attendance
Preparation
Contribution to class discussions, ensemble music making, and critical reflection
Maintenance of conscious kindness and a healthy work ethic
Regularly demonstrating initiative and exploration
Demonstration of clear effort and invested time both in and out of the classroom
*Students may lose class participation points by breaching the disciplinary rules of the
classroom.
*Absences can impact participation grades. This can be mitigated by students via the tools offered to them on Google Classroom via the Weekly Agenda, SoundTrap accounts, and more. Students who show clear involvement and initiative in tracking our ensemble progress and agenda can improve scores impacted by absences.
*In the case of serious illness or special circumstances accommodations will be made by
the teacher.
Curricular Performances
In addition, the culmination of our individual and ensemble efforts are celebrated in performances that cannot be replicated to their full extent. To that end, curricular performances are a graded and mandatory part of our assessment and learning.
*Concerts and CAVblock Dress Rehearsals are graded at a 50% weight. An unexcused absence from a Concert or CAVblock Dress Rehearsal will result in a 0 grade for the assignment, which can reduce a student's quarterly grade significantly.
* Due to the unique and curricular nature of these events, the Performing Arts Department works, to the best of our ability, with the HBHS Athletics, HBHS Robotics, and broader HBHS and SAU41 Communities to avoid conflicts when scheduling our 6 Curricular Performances (4 annual concerts, improv night, and dance recital) in April/May of the previous academic year.
* Due to the above factors, an absence due to an extra curricular or community event will not be considered and excused absence. Our Performing Arts staff has, and will continue, to work with students and families to find compromises when possible, if/when appropriate prior notice is provided.
*In the case of serious illness or special circumstances accommodations will be made by
the teacher.
