Kindergarten students learn how to train their brains to observe, ask questions, and develop models like scientists. They explore a wide variety of natural and designed materials to develop these practices. Students then apply these practices to a shared inquiry “How does the sun affect the Earth’s surface?’ Then, they design a solution to a problem caused by the sun’s heat, melting ice cream.
Kindergarten students observe patterns in what plants and animals, including humans, need to survive and how those needs are met where they live. They gather evidence for the claim that plants and animals change their environments to meet their needs. Students also obtain information on how humans harm the environment and communicate ways to reduce our negative impact.
