MAPlandia: In December, MAP 10 students had the challenge of combining the knowledge from all three MAP classes into one big final project: Maplandia. Students were assigned their teammates and a political “ISM” and had to create a 7-9 minute campaign speech, logo, and poster depicting why the people of Maplandia should vote for their political candidate to be the next ruler of the nation. Students researched historical context to create planks to use in their speech he rhetorical appeals and persuasive techniques they learned in English. They applied their Adobe Illustrator skills to create graphics to further support their argument. For the final, students dressed up in business attire and costumes to present in front of the entire MAP 10 student body. Some groups had raps and skits, and even passed out food. The students then voted on which ISM they wanted to rule MAPlandia next, and the winner was Romanticism.
Performing Shakespeare: In early November, MAP 10 students performed scenes from the play Julius Caesar, which they had just read in class. In preparation for this project, they were visited by Silicon Valley Shakespeare who gave them helpful acting advice and answered questions. Students worked in groups to create a director’s notebook with a detailed company report, blocking sheet, annotated scripts, and a character report for each person in the scene. On performance day, students walked into class dressed up in togas with props in hand and had a blast performing their scene.
Adobe Creative Cloud: To demonstrate their recently learned Adobe Illustrator skills, MAP 10 students recreated a 3D or live action image. Many chose to trace their favorite movie or TV show characters while learning how to create gradients, trace images, and mimic shadows and depth.
