When students have fun practicing Hebrew reading and comprehension, they spend more time on it, and their skills improve more rapidly (and joyfully!).
This website provides games that serve as additional reading practice to complement the TaL AM Hebrew reading curriculum. The games require access to only a black-and-white printer and some sort of bingo chips/markers to play. They are organized by the Ariot Hebrew reading books and can be played while using each book, alongside regular reading practice homework. (See the letters and vowels covered in each Ariot book here.)
I have also included pre-reading games. These games help reinforce the names and shapes of each Hebrew letter. They can be played both before learning to read and while learning to read. (None of these games require the ability to read any Hebrew, nor are they designed to provide Hebrew reading practice.) They are especially useful for students who confuse similar-looking letter pairs, such as: ו/ז ,ה/ח, כּ/כ, ד/ך, מ/ט, כּ/פּ, פּ/פ, ע/צ, ד/ר, ף/ך.
Once students know how to read all of the letters and vowels, it becomes easier to play Hebrew comprehension-oriented games. All of them also involve some reading, so they provide practice with both reading and comprehension. Those are gathered here.
Game preparation instructions and rules of play are posted here.
A complete list of all games from the site is posted here.
בְּהַצְלָחָה!
These games help students learn to match identical letters and differentiate between similar-looking ones, two great pre-reading skills.
Finally, I have also included photos and a video of some arts and crafts ideas for students who love to use their hands to learn. These other modalities also help students who are learning to read Hebrew. Feel free to use these at home or anywhere you find yourself!
A life-long fan of glue, scissors, tape, pipe cleaners, pompoms, googly eyes, play dough, and the like, I try to include these materials in my work as much as time and student behavior allow. Click on Arts & Crafts (above) for more ideas!
