Over the last decade studies have shown that San Diego County is park-rich, but many neighborhoods are park-poor. Access to green space is not equitable. People in certain groups based on income level, race, and ethnicity have less access to green spaces.
The benefits of close proximity to green spaces are many for both the residents and for the natural environment. Some benefits include, improved physical health, social and psychological development, economic benefits, offsetting climate change, improving storm water absorption, and providing habitats for flora and fauna, among others.

Do: Create real world solutions using existing research and data to improve green space access in your community. Students can use online maps, websites, and reports to collect data. They can go into their community to audit the green space availability and find areas that could be converted into green space. Students will research STEM careers in outdoor spaces and community organizations working on diversity, equity, and inclusion in parks.

Final projects can be shared with local community leaders and legislators, and EIS social media and website.
