Criteria
What is the criteria to earn the Seal of Civic Engagement?
To earn the State Seal of Civic Engagement, the State has put forth five (5) criteria students must demonstrate they have met through the submission of evidence. The District recognizes that students may have completed this criteria in various ways and has provided options for you. Click on the hyperlinks for detailed instructions for each option.
Criteria 1: Be engaged in academic work in a productive way;
Criteria 2: Demonstrate a competent understanding of United States and California constitutions; functions and governance of local governments; tribal government structures and organizations; the role of the citizen in a constitutional democracy; and democratic principles, concepts, and processes;
Option 1-5: Complete one of the following courses: Government 1(6757)†, American Government in World Affairs (6761)†, Government and Politics: United States AP (6839), Government and Politics: Comparative AP (6849), Or equivalent course (i.e. community college course in government, UCCI course in government) OR
Option 6: Civics Assessment in Google Forms
Criteria 3: Participate in one or more informed civic engagement project(s) that address real-world problems and require students to identify and inquire into civic needs or problems, consider varied responses, take action, and reflect on efforts;
Option 1: Participation in SDUSD Civic Showcase (also satisfies Criteria 4 & 5) OR
Option 2: Show evidence of regular participation in district or community civic-based teams as verified by school/district/community sponsor. Example: Student Equity Coalition; Council of ASB Presidents; Student Advisory Board, civics club, jMUN or MUN OR
Option 3: Show evidence of a completed civics project (i.e. Action Civics, YPAR)
Criteria 4: Demonstrate civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions through self-reflection;
Option 1: Participation in SDUSD Civic Showcase (also satisfies Criteria 3 & 5) OR
