As of November 2024, San Diego Unified School District's Criteria for the State Seal of Civic Engagement has been updated to support the district-wide implementation of the Ethnic Studies Graduation Requirement (ESGR).

There are five criteria that you have to meet to qualify for the State Seal of Civic Engagement:
1. Engagement
2. Democracy
3. Participation
4. Self Reflection
5.Character

Be engaged in academic work in a productive way;
Q: How do I fulfill this criteria?
A: To fulfill this criteria you must be on track to graduate.
As a Junior or Senior, on track to graduation means that you have a 2.0 GPA or higher or show academic improvement. You will need to attach your transcript to the application to show this.

Demonstrate a competent understanding of United States and California constitutions; functions and governance of local governments; tribal government structures and organizations; the role of the citizen in a constitutional democracy; and democratic principles, concepts, and processes;
Q: How do I fulfill this criteria?
A: To fulfill this criteria you must have a passing grade in at least two of the following classes listed below:
World History (Power & Identity Around the World, World History and Geography, Honors World History, Advanced World History, and AP European History.)
US History (Identity & Agency in U.S. History, Identity & Agency in U.S. History Honors, U.S. History and Geography, Honors U.S. History, and AP U.S. History.)
American Government equivalent courses include any course that meets the California for 12th grade Principles of American Democracy: Government, Honors Government, or AP Government and Politics.

Note: If you have not earned a C or better in World History, U.S. History, or American Government courses or have submitted request for pass/fail grades*, you may complete an Undue Hardship Waiver.

Q: How do I fulfill this criteria?
A: To fulfill this criteria you must choose from one of two options below.
Option 1: For Students Completeing Civic Engagement Projects Outside of Class Coursework
For your independent civic engagement project, you must have completed the following:
Identified a meaningful problem or issue
Researched the root causes & identified different ways to address the issue
Built awareness about the issue & promoted potential solutions
Discussed the issue & solutions with decision makers
Reflected on your impact, how you have grown & how you could improve

Option 2: For Students Completing a YPAR Project through Class Coursework
You completed all the major components of the Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) Project that your teacher required for the class. This might include:
Researching a topic
Writing about your research and what you learned
Creating a presentation (for the class or community) that includes both speaking and visuals that followed a teacher-provided rubric based on California State standards
Reflecting on your experience and what you learned during the project
Note: If you have an IEP, your teacher will provide support and accommodations to help you successfully complete each part of the project.
Demonstrate civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions through self-reflection;
Q: How do I fulfill this criteria?
A: To fulfill this criteria you must have reflected on the process and impact of your civic engagement project. Your reflection may take the form of a written response, video recording, or slide presentation.
Make sure to respond to ALL questions on this Reflection Guide AND share a copy of your reflection (e.g. written response, video recording, or slide presentation) with your Recommender listed in Criteria 5.
Note: All questions must be explicitly addressed. Reflection in Criteria 3 is a reflection of the work done on the Civic Engagement Activity/Plan. Criteria 4 is a reflection of self.
Exhibit character traits that reflect civic-mindedness and a commitment to positively impact the classroom, school, community and/or society;
Q: How do I fulfill this criteria?
A: To fulfill this criteria, you must select someone to recommend you.
Recommendation can be from a:
Teacher, Mentor, or Supervisor (Who supervised the project)
Civic partner OR Community member who has been impacted by the project
Note: If you are completing a project outside of a class, be sure to give your recommender a copy of your reflection from Criteria 4 so they can learn more about you and your project. Your recommenders must complete this online recommendation form. If you are completing a project through class coursework, work with your teacher to ensure a recommendation is submitted.
