Follow these steps to ensure your application to the SSCE is accepted:
Notify a Teacher, Mentor, or Supervisor of your interest in applying well in advance of the application due date.
Note: Students completing a project outside of class: Notify Tere Ceseña Bontempo, HSS Resource Teacher - mcesenabontempo@sandi.net to share your interest, learn about the process, and get additional support.
Complete a civic engagement project
Provide evidence of civic engagement learning by
Filling out this application
Completing and sharing a quick self-reflection (in written, oral, or different media formats) to one recommender, and
Ensuring a recommendation form is completed by a Teacher, Mentor, or Supervisor (Who supervised the project) or Civic partner OR Community member who has been impacted by the project
Eligibilty Reminder: You must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior and must have earned a C or better in two HSS Courses to apply (for more information, visit SSCE Criteria)

How can I prepare my responses for the SSCE Application?
Project Summary Questions
Prepare these responses summarizing your Civic/YPAR Project:
1) What meaningful problem/issues have you attempted to address?
Describe the problem or issue you focused on.
2) What actions have you taken to understand, build awareness, and/or address the problem/issue?
Explain how you built awareness, understood, and addressed the issue.
3) What decision-makers or systems of power/governance have you engaged with?
Identify who you interacted with (e.g., including but not limited to local government, school boards, school government) and how.
4) What key lessons have you learned from your civic engagement project/activities?
Summarize insights or skills you gained from your project.
Reflection Questions
Prepare responses to the following questions:
1) Reflecting on the World: To what extent did your actions meet your intended impact? How might the lessons you learned shape or strengthen your future actions?
2) Reflecting on the Community: How did your efforts engage people, groups, or organizations in your community? In what ways did your work advance the common good or make positive change for everyone?
3) Reflecting on the Self: What did you learn about yourself through this project, and how did you grow personally? What knowledge or skills did you gain?
