Before participating in a practicum or internship experience in SDUSD, a memorandum of agreement (MOA) must be in place between your university program and the school district. Please keep in mind that an MOA can be long, often taking an entire academic school year to establish. Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, partnerships will only be entered with NASP/APA-approved/accredited programs. Currently, SDUSD has an MOA with the following universities:
Cal State Los Angeles (Pending)
Fresno State University
Loyola Marymount University
Sacramento State University (Pending)
San Diego State University
The University of California, Riverside
Trainers and faculty affiliated with a university program that currently does not have an MOA with SDUSD can contact us at schoolpsychprep@sandi.net to discuss the requirements for and the process of obtaining an MOA. Please take a look at the contents of the tabs below (Professional Standards and Supervision Expectations) when you reach out to us.
The SDUSD School Psychology Practicum and Internship Programs' adhere to the NASP 2020 Professional Standards and expect university programs to implement said standards to include the Standards for Graduate Preparation of School Psychologists. This requires that programs ensure adequate candidate support through the following:
Extensive, intensive, and individualized faculty advisement, supervision, and mentoring of candidates during practica and internships (NASP, Program Standard 1.2)
Maintaining an approximate ratio of no greater than 1:12 school psychology faculty FTE to school psychology candidate FTE including practica and internship (NASP, Program Standard 1.2) to ensure appropriate communication with SDUSD supervising school psychologists and fulfill the depth and breadth of requirements underscored in the NASP Practice Model.
University program supervisors and district supervising school psychologists share the responsibility of supervision. Therefore, university programs should have a designated supervisor who is closely involved in the following:
Program oversight to ensure identification and appropriateness of placements, diverse activities that address breadth and scope of the NASP Practice Model, supervision, and collaboration with the placement sites and practicum/internship supervisors. (NASP, Credentialing Standard 4.3, CASP, Internship Manual, 2019)
Performance-based evaluations that are systematic and designed to ensure that candidates demonstrate professional work characteristics and attain competencies with clearly articulated methods to identify and address concerns regarding candidates’ performance. (NASP, Credentialing Standard 4.3)
Evaluation of progress through regularly scheduled placement site visits (in-person or virtually) (CASP, Internship Manual 4.3)
