The demand for highly skilled engineers and construction specialists is growing world-wide. Global warming, climate change, fossil fuel depletion and energy shortages are creating a new generation of sustainable construction and engineering careers. In 2011, The Sustainable Ac ademy of Building and Engineering (SABE) was created to prepare students for college and career in such fields. Through project-based learning, students work across contents connecting their core classes to academy electives. Through this pathway, SABE students engage in authentic workplace experiences such as job shadows, guest speaking events, and hands-on learning experiences. Additionally, the capstone course, General Construction, provides students with internship opportunities and OSHA training, making students ready to enter the workforce as well as institutions of higher learning.
SABE empowers students to become college- and career-ready leaders through hands-on, project-based learning focused on engineering, construction, and sustainability. By connecting classroom learning to real-world experiences, students develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to build a better future.
SABE envisions a future where every student is equipped to innovate, lead, and create sustainable solutions that positively impact their communities and the world.
The Associated General Contractors (AGC) San Diego Chapter is a leading organization that supports the local construction industry and helps develop the next generation of skilled professionals. As a key SABE partner, AGC provides students with opportunities to explore careers in construction, connect with industry professionals, and gain real-world insights into the field. Their support helps students build the knowledge, skills, and connections needed for future success in college and careers.
The Electrical Training Institute (ETI) prepares the next generation of electricians and telecommunications professionals through hands-on training, industry certifications, and apprenticeship programs. As a valued SABE partner, ETI helps students explore careers in the skilled trades, connect with industry experts, and learn about pathways to high-demand, well-paying careers in construction and electrical work. Their partnership helps students see how classroom learning can lead directly to real-world opportunities.
The UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering is one of the nation’s top engineering schools and a leader in innovation, research, and workforce development. As a valued SABE partner, the UCSD Engineering chapter provides students with opportunities to explore engineering careers, connect with college students and professionals, and engage in hands-on STEM learning experiences. Their partnership helps inspire students to pursue higher education and careers in engineering, technology, and design while building a strong pipeline to future opportunities.
SABE students have the opportunity to visit local union training centers and apprenticeship programs throughout the school year. During these visits, students tour state-of-the-art facilities, participate in hands-on activities, meet industry professionals, and learn about career pathways in the skilled trades. These experiences help students connect classroom learning to real-world careers while exploring opportunities for training, apprenticeships, and employment after high school.
SABE students participate in architecture tours that explore some of San Diego’s most unique and innovative buildings, public spaces, and development projects. Through guided tours and discussions, students learn how architecture influences the way people live, work, and interact with their communities. These experiences help students connect design concepts from the classroom to real-world examples while exploring careers in architecture, engineering, and construction.
SABE students participate in sustainability experiences throughout San Diego in partnership with organizations such as the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, along with other local farms, conservation groups, and environmental organizations. Students visit sites like the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to learn about wildlife conservation, sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and environmental stewardship. These hands-on experiences help students connect classroom learning to real-world environmental challenges while exploring careers focused on building a more sustainable future.
