The Mission of Operation LEAAP is to advance mathematics proficiency through enhanced instruction, real world learning and student engagement at five elementary schools and one middle school that serve at least 10 percent military-connected students. This is an update of each school's progress during year 1 implementation, 2024-25.
Crown Point Junior Academy has been in transition this year with Whole Site Modernization fully underway at the school site. Push-in tutoring has focused on grades 4 and 5. Teachers have been collaborating around student engagement and contextual learning. The Operation LEAAP resource teacher has been pushing into classrooms to co-teach and model lessons to support student engagement. Teacher leader attended UCSD Mathematics Project: Teaching Fractions Through Ratio Reasoning professional development with the intent to share with colleagues at the site.
This was the first year for the Fletcher principal. Her focus for the year was getting to know the staff, students and families, while building staff efficacy to address the diverse needs of students. In addition, her staff began to look at student data to inform classroom instruction. Tutoring focused on working with students who were proficient or advanced, allowing the classroom teacher time to work with students who needed additional targeted support to learn math concepts. The Operation LEAAP resource teacher spent time with teachers in their classrooms to co-teach and model lessons, collaborating with the principal around contextual learning opportunities, such creating a STEAM focused math lab that can be accessed by teachers, as well as field trips to build student engagement. In the spring, all students in grades 3-5 participated in a field trip to i-Fly where they learned how parachutes work by building a parachute, investigating and changing a variable, and predicting the determining the effect the change would have on the parachute’s behavior. They used rulers and stop watches in their investigations, recorded data during their parachute launches and discussed possible reasons for their results.
Hancock focused on a deep dive into the 3 Reads Protocol for mathematics. The 3 Reads Protocol is a method to help students learn, understand and engage in critical thinking to understand and solve word problems. The school year began with the LEAAP resource teacher conducting professional development around the 3 Reads Protocol. Teachers then went back to their classrooms to implement learned strategies with students. Teachers were asked to collect evidence on student engagement, proficiency and outcomes to then bring back and discuss in grade level teams to analyze and inform more targeted math classroom supports for their students. Tutoring focused on working with those third grade students who are approaching math proficiency allowing each classroom teacher and special education specialist to target students who needed extra support. The school also held a Family Math Night in which the LEAAP resource teacher met parents and provided a tip sheet about how to help support their student/s in learning math at home. The 4th grade teachers will participated in a lesson study in early May with the support of the Operation LEAAP resource teacher. The Resource teacher has been collaborating with the school garden teacher to enhance opportunities for contextual learning in their outdoor space on campus.
Miller established a school-wide focus for professional development tying into the 3 Reads Protocol and collaborative conversations around deep concepts and teacher reflection utilizing the Kagan method. Teachers in grades 3-5 met in grade level meetings to look at student data and how the data informs classroom instruction. The LEAAP resource teacher collaborated with school leadership to identify these specific areas of need and facilitated school-wide professional development. Operation LEAAP resource teacher has been co-teaching and modeling lessons to help teachers focus on instruction by understanding who is doing the talking and the thinking in the classroom, which results in more student-led learning. Tutoring focused on students in fifth and ⅘ combo grades who have been identified as at-risk in the area of mathematics as part of the Student Study Team's (SST) 6-8 week intervention cycle.
Perry has taken an “all-in” approach to math achievement this school year. The school year started with school-wide professional development around mapping the Envison mathematics curriculum and district resources, followed by understanding and using the Three Reads Protocol and engaging in student math discourse as an instructional strategy. The Professional Learning Community (PLC) focus for the year was on looking at student data to inform instructional practice. The Operation LEAAP resource teacher has been pushing into teacher classrooms to co-teach and provide side-by-side support, particularly at the fourth and fifth grades levels. The resource teacher is also working with the principal to implement a lesson study where teachers try on and share best practices to experience an ideal state for a math classroom. Two teachers are working together to create a field trip protocol for studying and understanding how math comes into play at the San Diego Zoo to support Operation LEAAP’s contextual learning component.
Taft has been collaborating with Montgomery Middle School to achieve alignment in teaching middle school math concepts. This year, Operation LEAAP was able to enhance math instruction by purchasing scientific calculators for all math classrooms and providing an opportunity for 7th grade students to attend the Miramar Air Show and participate in the Tech Expo. Operation LEAAP resource teacher worked with math teachers to establish a tutor schedule for all 6-8 grade students. Tutoring is expected to start next school year.
Students at Operation LEAAP schools have unique opportunities to engage in learning math and problem solving.
Teachers at Operation LEAAP schools engage in professional development, learning new instructional strategies and concepts.
Operation LEAAP school leaders gathered in June to review the DoDEA grant planning year and begin to plan what Operation LEAAP will look like at individual school sites as we advance towards implementation in the upcoming school year. Check out the great things that are happening at each of our Operation LEAAP schools.
