Hello McKinley Community! I am thrilled to be your counselor again this year, and this time--5 days a week! This increase in time allows me more time to be with our students--in classrooms and around campus. School counselors focus on helping all students feel safe and welcome at school, and teach skills and tools that help students find success in the school setting. This includes the 3 domains of personal-social skills, academic skills, and college & career exploration & planning.
Originally from the East Coast, I have lived in San Diego for almost 20 years. When I am not at school, I enjoy bike riding, cooking, crafty things, spending time with friends & family, being outdoors, board games and word games, and sipping coffee while watching the world go by. I am on a mission this year to be more mindful and present, and am learning meditation practices to help. I look forward to bringing these concepts and practices to our students, so we can build a community of care for ourselves and others.
School Counselors have a unique role. We provide school based supports to help students be successful in 3 primary domains: personal-social, academics, and college & career planning. We support students with classroom lessons, small group counseling, and/or individual counseling. School counseling is short term in duration, and is not intended to be therapy. While we teach strategies and tools that enable all students to thrive in school environment and maximize their experiences here, many of the skills they learn are applicable in other areas of life!
Here is a short video about the Multi-Tiered Multi-Domain System of Support (or MTMDSS) that counselors use as a framework for what we do!
