What are we learning this year?

With an increase in counseling time to a full 5 days a week, I am able to provide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons to every K-5 classroom, every week! This is an exciting opportunity not only for me to get to know our students better, but for students to have more opportunities to learn and grow in this important area of life. Read on to learn more about what your students are doing this year! Updates will be posted as the year moves on, so feel free to check in from time to time to see what's next for your students.

This year, students will be gaining valuable Social-Emotional skills throught the Second Step program. This program highlights skills that help students become better learners, both academically and socially. Each grade level receives approximately 22 lessons in the full scope of the program, along with catchy tunes that help them remember what they are learning.

Second Step takes student through 3-4 learning units, depending on their grade level. The skills build on each other and concepts from preceding units are embedded in their continued learning. The Skills for Learning Unit helps students master staying focused and on task, while showing respect to others

Students use facial expressions, body language, and the situation to figure out how someone else is feeling

Belly breathing, counting, positive self-talk, and so many other coping skills help students learn how to get calm and stay calm

Solving the problem is as easy as STEP! Thinking about what others want or need helps students state the problem without using blaming words or phrases

During the month of October, students will learn about bullying--how to recognize it, and how to stand up and be an ally against it! Don't forget about our Bullying Prevention Spirit week from October 16th through 20th!

Back by popular demand, it's the Hedgies! The Child Mind Institute created a series of videos to help students learn about strong emotions and how to manage them. They'll visit with us as we move toward our Emotion Management Unit in Second Step. They'll help us learn what strong emotions feel like, and ways to cope with them. They will also help us learn about mindfulness.

K-2 students navigate the Career Town map to investigate a mystery while learning about different fields of work and what people in those jobs do.

3-5 students embark on different missions to help them learn about their interests, skills, and goals that can relate to their world of work later in life. Students can explore some of the specifics of about 100 different jobs, including where people in that job work, how they get started, and how much money they make.

Hello Xello!

After Spring Break, students can look forward to learning about and using Xello. This is a career exploration program provided by our school district to help introduce students to the world of work! At the elementary level, students play games and embark on missions that help them explore what jobs are out there that are related to their interests. Later on, Xello becomes a tool to help them create post-secondary plans. All students in San Diego Unified have access to Xello through their Clever page--ask your child to show you what they are learning!
