Ramadan (rum-uh-dawn) is an Islamic holiday celebrated by Muslims all over the world (and in many Muslim countries). During Ramadan, Muslims fast from the morning prayer, Fajr (fudge-r) until the Maghrib (Mug-rib) prayer at sunset. Although not obligatory, Muslims prepare for the day’s fast with a meal before Fajr called sehri or suhoor (depending on where in the world you are). Throughout the day, Muslims are supposed to spend their fast worshipping before breaking their fast with a meal at Maghrib called iftar (iff-thar). Many Muslims also stay up late at night praying a night prayer known as taraweeh (turu-weeH). Ramadan lasts for 30 days and ends with a celebration called Eid-ul-Fitr (eed-al-fithr), wherein Muslims spend the day with the Eid prayer, eating lavish feasts, exchanging gifts, and spending time with friends and family. Be sure to wish your Muslim friends a Ramadan Kareem!
