The goal of this project is to work with Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Birch Aquarium to help the scientists in their goal of translating complex science to the public while incorporating design and display techniques as seen in the aquarium exhibits. This year we are focusing on raising awareness and empathy around the topic of Marine Protected Areas. This central topic will break down into three focuses consisting of: Ocean Acidification, Rising Sea Levels due to Thermal Expansion, and Algal Blooms due to Run-Off.
(1) This central problem is actively being tackled by environmental agencies who are collecting data and displaying it in a format that will raise awareness within the local and global communities. Awareness campaigns consist of a variety of print media, video, and exhibits to better inform the public which aligns with the artifacts our students will be producing.
(2) The theme of digital media and design will be incorporated through our students’ use of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Premier Pro to create a variety of print and video outcomes. The students will receive feedback from both scientists and graphic designers to ensure accurate information and industry-level.
