The assignment's idea for this week is to design and assemble a pen and pencil holder on Fusion 360, I was inspired by this 2-in-1 elephant holder that can be used as a mobile and pen holder, the trunk of the elephant is curved upward so that it can be used as a stand to hold a mobile phone and the body will be used to hold stationary items inside it.
I used fusion 360 application to sketch the design of the glasses frame, and save the design as .dxf.
I used LaserWork V6 Application in order to prepare the .dxf prepared on fusion and save it to RLD. file.
Plywood 3mm is the material used in my design on laser cutting machine.
This Laser cutter Machine used to emit a laser that can cut and engrave according to the settled power and speed.
I decided to start with the base so i created a component with the name of support panel, i create my sketch on the x-y axis (Bottom).
I started by drawing a ( 82× 82) square and i decided to make the origin in the middle of this square in order to make circular pattern easier so i created 2-points and define them with the side to square as (82/2).
I drew the T-Slot and 2-Taps on one of the side of the square, then i made a circular pattern with quantity 4 to make T-slot on each side.
Drew a circle 3mm in the center of the square.
After i finished sketching this side i Extrude it by 3mm.
I created a new component with the name of front- back panel, i created my sketch on one of the taps of the support panel.
Project the taps and start drawing a circle 3mm between them to be the hole that the nail will entre from.
Drew a rectangle ( 76× 82).
Drew T-Slots on the right and mirror it to the left side.
After i finished sketching this side i Extrude it by 3mm.
From joint i start assembling the support side with the front side.
Copy - Paste the front side in order to make the back side.
Assemble the back side with the support panel.
I created a new component with the name of middle panel in order to divide the holder into 2-compartments to hold different stationary items.
I created the sketch on the middle taps of the support panel.
Drew a rectangle ( 70× 82), and why 70 not 76 like the previous side actually that happened because in the front-back sides there are 3mm below the taps that make these sides shifted down and another 3mm as the taps of the middle panels will be assembled from up.
Drew the taps, then Extrude the sketch by 3mm.
Assemble the middle panel with the support panel.
I created a new component with the name of Elephant side
Create the sketch on one of the taps, then project all the taps.
It was really hard to decide where should i start, so i started with the legs, then the trunk and the full body it wasn't easy at all it took alot of time but finally after Extruding it and applying fillets, i was satisfied El7amdllAllah.
Then i created a new sketch after extruding to draw the eyes and extrude it.
Then i decided to add some decorations on the elephant, so i start editing on its the original sketch and add some geometrical shapes and extrude them.
Assemble the elephant side with the other sides.
Copy this side to create the left side.
Assemble the left side.
I decided to draw a flower on the Front-Back sides, it was hard to fully define it as i used the S Pline tool, one of the instructors helped me to define it.
Extrude the flower.
Add Appearance to all the sides.
Save DXF for laser cutting for each side with kerf 0.1.
When saving the Elephant side as DXF for laser cutting i faced a problem because the big circles cutting the elephant body seems like they are different body so i couldn't select the whole body, and save the body with the decorations on it, and up till now i don't know if there is a way to solve this problem.
I decided to take the flower on the Front- Back side copy and paste it on the elephant side and extrude it instead of the geometrical shapes, however i loved the geometrical shapes more.

Open LaserWork and Import all the saved sides.
Select the parts needed to cut and make it blue, while the parts needed to be scanned with Red
Adjust the power and speed of each.
Cut: Speed 40, Power 45
Scan: Speed 250, Power 30
Save file as .RLD.
Turn on the machine from the green circular button.
Open Laser work from the PC connected to the machine , and open my .rld file.
Make sure that the power and speed of cut and scan are adjusted.
Make sure that the origin of software is correctly set with the machine.
Press download, so that the file will be downloaded to the machine.
Now, from the machine, press on File button., and select my file.
Put my plywood sheet in the desired place, where the nozzel is pointing to the sheet, make sure its fixed.
Move the nozzel to the desired place on the wood, the press origin to set it as the origin that i wanted.
Adjust the focus.
Press on frame button to see the area of cutting and make sure that its okay.
Close the door, and press start.
First:
It was challenging to fully define the flower on the front-back sides as i used the S Pline tool to draw it and it has alot of points, one of the instructors helped me to fully define it.
Second:
I faced a problem to save the elephant panel with the geometrical drawings on it as it was cutting the elephant body, so when extruding it, It seems like they are different parts to be selected not only one side, i solved the problem temporarily by removing these geometrical shapes and adding the flower instead of it, and by the way when i tried to put half the flower on the top of the elephant, i faced the same problem which is there is something cutting the main body, so i put the whole flower inside it to skip this problem.
Third:
When putting a mobile on the trunk, the mobile remains in a perpendicular position to the truck, there is no space to adjust the angle for comfortable viewing.
Learning and practicing how to model, manage, and joint multi-component objects in Fusion 360, will be essential part in designing my Final Project.
It was such an amazing session with many challenges. 💪 Working with a great team to design, fabricate, and assemble a lantern, we started by creating a plan, which was the most important part. 💡 Then, we decided to work by dividing ourselves into one driver and two navigators. I learned a lot from my teammates and instructors and, of course, had a lot of fun. 😄
Comparing my first time using Fusion last week to now, I am really impressed with what I have learned and am still eager to learn more. 🤓
