Elephant coaster

Laser Fabrication:
For laser cutting assignment for this week, The idea is to pick a 2D model, we would like to cut taking into consideration that it has to be a single piece model with file extension .dxf.
As a person who loves drinking coffee, enjoys watching videos about elephants specially baby elephants, and super overthinker this design of elephant coaster takes my heart, I felt like the decorative part represent how huge of thoughts are in my mind when I'm overthinking, I decided to add the word smi)e, in order to feel more better while drinking coffee.
I found this design on 3axix.co website, you can find it in this link https://3axis.co/laser-cut-elephant-decorative-design-cdr-file/pok3dlj7/
3D printing:
For 3D printing assignment, The idea of this week is to pick a 3D model with file extension .STL, taking into consideration that the printing time must not exceed 90 minutes.
When LEGO recently started making LEGO Flower Bouquet kits, I was really impressed. So, when I saw 3D-printed flowers, I really wanted to try making them. However, considering the requirements that state it has to be just one piece, I decided to print the flower itself without the stem and make it as a brooch pin to hang on my bag.
I found the design on Thingiverse website, you can find the design in this link www.thingiverse.com/thing:2398010
LaserWork Application
I used LaserWork V6 Application in order to prepare my .dxf file of the desired model and save it to RLD. file.
Plywood 3mm sheets
Plywood is one of the materials that can be used in laser cutting machine.
This Laser cutter Machine used to emit a laser that can cut and engrave according to the settled power.
UltiMaker Cura Program
I used UltiMaker Cura Application in order to prepare my file of the desired model to be printed.
PLA Filament
PLA filament is an affordable material , used to print your desired model.
Prusa i3 MK3 Printer
This printer can read g.code file and print the 3D model.
I choose my design from 3axis.but it was with file format. .crd, So I used Cloud convert to convert it to .DXF format.
Open LaserWork V6 application and import the saved .DXF file.
Start adjusting the dimensions as needed.
Adding the text Smi)e to my design.
Select the parts required to cut and make it with black, adjust the parameters of speed and power.
Speed: 30
Power: 45
Select the parts required to engrave (the word smi)e) and make it with red, select scan, and adjust the parameters of speed and power.
Speed: 250
Power: 25
Save as the .RLD file.
Now your file is ready.
Download the desired file from Thingiverse with file extension .STL
Open UltiMaker Cura application and import the saved .STL file.
Add the printer name Prusa i3 MK2, add Set the Material to Generic PLA.
Set up the quality layer height to Normal 0.15mm in order to make the final result smooth.
Set the Infill Density to 20%.
Because the flower base is pointed , it need a brim so that , I activated the Adhesion.
Finally the Support, as it will be risky to depend on the hangover in this design, i activated the support and i adjust it to Touching Buildplate.
Make sure that printing temperature is 215 degrees.
Press on Slice to see the expected time will be taken to print this model.
After adjusting my print settings, the expected time taken for printing the flower with its original size 100% was 6 Hours and 14 minutes, So i have to rescale it according to the required time.
From scale i started to minimize the size of my flower until i reach 51%.
The expected time taken was 85 minutes , and for the expected grams it was 11 g.
Save the file as .gcode in the SD card that will be used in the printer.
Turn on the machine from the green circular button.
Open Laser work from the PC connected to the machine , and import my .dxf file.
Make sure that the power and speed of cut and scan are adjusted.
Make sure that the origin of software is correctly set with the machine.
Press download, so that the file will be downloaded to the machine.
Now, from the machine, press on File button., and select my file.
Move the nozzel to the top right of the machine.
Put my plywood sheet in the desired place, where the nozzel is pointing to the sheet, make sure its fixed.
Adjust the focus.
Press on origin button , the frame button to see the area of cutting and make sure that its okay.
Close the door, and press start.
Make sure that the .gcode file is saved on the memory card.
Insert the memory card into the printer.
Press on the control knob and choose unload filament in order to change the filament color.
Put the desired filament, choose and press on load filament.
Press print from SD, then select my file name.
After printing the model, start removing the supports, in order to get the final model.
For my the only challenge i faced was to sanded the bottom face of the flower, i tried to use heating machine in order to help but it didn't work.
The skills of using LaserWork and UltiMaker Cura to edit on the chosen designs and prepare it for cutting and printing will be a main thing to be used in the final project.
Dealing with the laser cutting machine and 3-D printer.
The coolest thing I've learned this week is how to use a 3D printer and laser cutting machine for printing and cutting on my own. It was an incredible experience to have hands-on access and the opportunity to handle the process
