The purpose of my project is to create a Montessori busy board designed to engage and educate young children from 3 to 6 years. This project addresses the issue of young children being curious and often playing with dangerous items like switches, plugs, and fans. By providing a safe and stimulating alternative, the busy board allows children to satisfy their curiosity and learn through play which emphasize hands-on learning and exploration without the risk of injury. This busy board will include gears, buttons, LEDs, buzzers, simple motors, and a Whack-a-Mole game, all controlled by an Arduino UNO
The Montessori busy board will includes both electronic and mechanical components to provide a safe, interactive, and educational experience for children. This busy board will engage young minds through hands-on learning.
Mechanical Elements:
Locks: Various types of locks that children can manipulate to develop their fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities.
Gears: children can turn and explore how motion and mechanics work together.
Mini-Maze
Hour glass
Active Elements Like:
Motorized Fan: Controlled by a slider, this motor will have a small fan attached. The slider will adjust the fan’s speed, and a connected screen will display numbers from 1 to 5, indicating the speed setting. This helps children understand the relationship between control input and mechanical output.
LEDs and switches: Some interactive elements that light up using turn on-off switch.
Whack-a-Mole Game: This game will feature five colored Arcade LED push buttons. One of these buttons will blink randomly, and the child must press the correct button. The game will increase in speed as the child correctly hits the buttons, improving their hand-eye coordination and reaction time. https://youtu.be/pN1BC3Bc3AE?si=PGdQDxbBgw9u9Slz
Electronic mini piano: An electronic xylophone that plays different notes when buttons are pressed, introducing children to basic concepts of music and electronics. https://youtu.be/Hs5YiV-eUDE?si=FE1QS5oYwnzC4WC8
Numbers display using IR-Remote control and LED Matrix.
Buzz wire with score game.
Construction Parts
The Montessori busy box will be designed as 2.5D parts using Fusion 360 and fabricated using Laser Cutting.
Input
(Sensing, Tactile Input, and/or Graphical Input)
The game console will take input from the child using On/Off buttons. Also the whack-a-mole game console can take 4- colored illuminated push button input so that the child can press on when being blinked. Also the Mini-Fan could work with a Slider that will be able to increase or decrease the speed of motor rotation. IR Remote Control could be use to display something on LED Matrix.
Action
(Physical and/or Graphic)
LEDs controlled by ON/OFF Switches and push buttons.
DC Motor controlled by Slider.
Speaker to play some sounds controlled by a Knob.
LED Matrix controlled by IR Remote control.
Brain
An Arduino UNO board will be used take inputs and generate actions
Power Management
The Montessori busy box console will be powered using 12V batteries, in which there will battery case holder with 4 cells and each cell will include 3V battery, to create a compact design for the console.
Minimum Features: are the least amount of features that would demonstrate the coverage of all the technical modules and their complete integration
Complete Features: are the set of features that will complete your original project objective and vision
Nice-to-have Features: are the extra set of features that will make the project cooler, yet they need extra time, effort, and/or resources to finish
Minimum User Features
The Whack-A-Mole game console generates a random blinks of the colored illuminated push button and it will be getting faster as the child is solving it correctly and a buzzer will make a sound once the child press a wrong button.
Action: Arcade LED push buttons/ Buzzer/Digital Score display.
Sensing: None
User Input: ON/OFF Switch and Arcade LED push buttons.
