Week 2 - Journal

Ideation

Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)

Imaginary design

The assignment is to Design a Cool Glasses model for personal use.

I care about this idea because I will mix different plastic and wooden parts, which seems interesting.

I was inspired by the cars with fly doors.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

I used Ultimaker-Cura software to edit and prepare the file for the printing stage – and I will use the 3D printing machine (Prusa i3 MK2) to print it, and the material is PLA filament

I used Laser work software to edit and prepare the file for the Cutting stage – and I will use the Laser cutter machine to Shape it, and the material is 3mm plywood board

I used fusion 360 to design the models I will use in my project.

I used cardboard to make a mobile holder prototype because I can easily shape it, and it is affordable around me.

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

I-Frame Design

Step (1): I started by sketching the frame, I started by creating the first Half outlines of the frame and making it fully defined.

Step (2): Next step was to Draw the construction line.

Step (3): Then I mirrored the fully defined Half and I finished the sketch.

Step (4): I extruded the sketch by 3mm thickness, which is the thickness of the used plywood sheet,

Step (5): I added circles with a 3mm diameter for M3 bolts, which will be used to connect the frame & Arms together after fabrication.

Step (6): After that, I exported the sketch as DXF file.

Step (7): I changed the frame appearance to get a close similar look for how it would look like after fabrication.

Step (8): I uploaded the exported DXF file to Laser-work & sat the parameters to be speed 10m/s & 70% power. Then I downloaded the file to the machine and started to cut it.

II- ARM Design

Step (1): I started by sketching the main shape of the first arm.

Step (2): I extruded the sketch by 3mm thickness.

Step (3): Next step was to add the triangle part which is going to be used to connect frame & arm together after fabrication.

Step (4): Next step was to add a circle with a 3m diameter for M3 bolts which is going to be used to connect frame & temple together after fabrication.

Step (5): I created a copy of the Arm by mirroring it to create a pair of glasses temples then, I filleted their corners by a 5mm radius to.

Step (6): I created a copy of the Arm by mirroring it to create a pair of glasses temples then, I filleted their corners by a 5mm radius.

Step (7): I used the fillet tool to make the Outside corners Rounded

Step (8): I changed the arm's appearance to get a close similar look to how it would look after fabrication.

Step (9): After that, I exported the pair of the temples' mesh as STL files.

Step (9): I uploaded the exported STL file to Cure to slice it with 0.3 mm layer height, 3 parameter walls & 10% infill density, also sat the temperature to 215°C & exported gcode file & loaded it to the printer using SD card, the print time was 30 mins & consumed 3 grams of PLA.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

I-Laser Cutting

Using the laser cutter machine, I opened the .rld file, then named the file & downloaded it to the machine.

After that I sat the origin point of cutting & tracked the design space frame, then I started the cutting process which took about 3 min to finish the design.

II-3D Printing

Using 3D printer, I loaded the .gcode file that has been sliced by Cura from the SD card, then I selected the file from the printer & start printing process, it takes a while to reach the required temperature to print PLA to start printing, the print took about 30min to finish the design

III-Assembling design

To connect the frame & the Arms together, I used M3 bolts to connect them

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises?  How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

I still couldn't imagine the real size of the objects while I was designing, so I printed a huge body ( the main body ) the first time, and I adjusted it again on RD works with little changes in the size of the side holes (3M) – yes I asked for help, and one of my colleges told me the ideal size .

I tried many times to use the fit point spline tool to draw the arms, and I succeeded, and I liked it because it was so smooth, but I couldn't make it a fully defined shape- I watched a lot of tutorials, but it did not work this is the useful one:

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

Now I can fabricate objects from two materials ( plastic and wood). Also, I improved ( somehow) my skills in designing with fusion 360, which will support my work in the final project. Also, I used different features ( I spent a lot of time experimenting with tools ) I might use in my final project.

WOW!

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

The most remarkable thing was the ability to drive someone in a collective task.

I will never forget the difference between the thing I wish to build and my reel ability. It was easy to imagine a cool thing, but so essential to think of the validity of Implementation with the current time and tools.

Weekly Digest [OPTIONAL]

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.

This week in the hands-on activity, I tried to take a concept unrelated to the thing I was working on and try to apply this concept to another thing- I chose the car with a wings door, and I imagined how can I fabricate glasses with the same feature Unfortunately, I couldn't Implement

 It's this, but I will 😊
