Ideation

QR Code model

The first part of this week's assignment was to choose a 3D Model and prepare it to Be Printed, and I selected the QR Code model.

I care about this idea because I have seen it before, and I want to make it by myself.

Laser Cut model

The second part of this week's assignment was to choose a Model and prepare it to Be cut, and I selected the clock model.

I chose this one because I like the design and want to make a medal.

Tool Chain

Which software/machines/materials did you use in the assignment? Why?

I used Ultimaker-Cura software to edit and prepare the file for the printing stage – and I will use the 3D printing machine (Prusa i3 MK2) to print it, and the material is PLA filament – because it's my first time printing something

I used Laser work software to edit and prepare the file for the Cutting stage – and I will use the Laser cutter machine to Shap it, and the material is 3mm plywood board

Design/Preparation Process

Explain the design and/or preparation process of your assignment. How did you use the tool or software to design and/or prepare your assignment before fabrication/implementation?

I-3D Printing

Step (1): I downloaded .stl design file from the source file:https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4547262

Step (2): I prepare the design on cura. Then I adjusted the dimensions of the shape.

Step (3): I set the infill with 20% without supports and 0.1 mm resolution. Then I sliced the body.

Step (4): Then I get the gcode for the object and upload it to the machine's memory. I entered the memory card and selected the program then the program started.

II-Laser cutting

Step (2): I find different shapes on the file and selected the shape of the woman and I removed the other shapes

Step (3): I edited the shape by repeating the woman's face and flipping it and made a circle on top of the medal

Step (5): I started to set the settings of the shape. I decided to do three operations cut, speed cut, and grave. And I connected the PC to the laser cutter machine to upload the file.

The parameters of the cut are speed 10 -70 power.

Development/Implementation Process

Explain the development/implementation process of your assignment. How did you use the machine/tool to manufacture or implement the design of your assignment?

I-3D Printing

For 3D printing, I loaded the. gcode file that has been sliced by Cura to the printer using an SD card, then I selected the file from the printer & chose it, the printer takes a while to reach the required temperature to print PLA, which is 215C for the nozzle & 60C for the bed & after that, it started to print.

II-Laser cutting

After finalizing the file preparation in laser work, I downloaded the file into the laser cut machine and chose my file from the screen.

I adjusted the focus and tracked the frame from the laser cutting job to make sure my frame was inside the sheet of wood running the file.

Overcoming Challenges

What kinds of challenges or problems did you face while doing the assignment, tutorials, or exercises? How did you solve them? Did you ask for help from an instructor or peer? Please provide a link to the tutorial or article that you used to solve your problem (if any)

The challenge is we had two different laser cutter Machines in the lab, and every one of them needed a different version of laser works program. I prepared myself to use the small one, and the available machine was a big one, so I had to change the setting, open the design in Illustrator, export it, and edit it again in the suitable version of laser works.

Final Project

How can you use the skills and knowledge that you've acquired this week in your final project?

I will use the skill of building a prototype with cardboard. I can use sites like Thingiverse - 3axis.co to find ideas and how to use the 3d printer machine and the laser cutter to create the items – and the parts I will need in my project also use the laser works program and Ultimaker-Cura to adjust my designs and prepare the details.

What is the coolest thing that you've learned this week? What is something that you will never forget from this week?

The coolest thing I learned this week is all I need to make my Qr code – I will not forget to ask about the laser cutter machine model and its type of programs.

Tell us about any other cool things that you've made this week: in the Hands-on activity, tutorial examples, exercises, or any other cool mini-project that you tried out aside from the assignment.

It was my first time printing anything in 3d printing, and I understood the idea of support and how can I handle it - also the first time using the laser cutter machine , and i understood i must recognize which part i cut because we lost the bog eye.
