This week we are supposed to make a pencil holder with our own desire of the materials used (wether laser cutter or 3d printer or both). I was so excited for this assignment as it seemed more practical regarding the product we should make, as I am trying to focus on the useful things I can create and use it later on. While searching for the design idea inspiration, I crossed by many and many designs, but almost nothing catched me.
Actually I shared my wife to search with me which to work on, we crossed by some little number of things we liked, but suddenly we looked at each other and knew that's the one. Actually I gathered two separated products into one to achieve the multi using concept. The most thing that I was inspired by is that it's a multi-functional product that's important for every desk worker.
The design is important for every desk worker as it solves the problem of unorganized desk as we can't find many objects we already keeping them scattered all over the desk. So the product will be multi-functional for keeping things together, hold your mobile and even your snacks. This results a clean-organized desk.
I took an inspiration from this for my design's top
I took an inspiration from this for my design's overall body shape and making layers
I took an inspiration from this for my design's mobile stand idea
The machines
I used CNC laser cutting machine to cut the the multi-functional pencil holder.
The soft-wares
Of course, I used LaserWork and Cura to work on the DXF and STL files. More over I used Fusion 360 to design the multi-functional pencil holder.
The materials
Also, I used mdf 3mm wood, screws and nuts to assemble the parts of the design together as materials for my product
Firstly, I took the dimensions of the all sides of the holder, taking into consideration the dimensions of the mobiles, as the holder includes part for mobile stand.
Secondly, using Fusion 360 to sketch the pencil holder design.
Thirdly, to make the design 3d I used extrude and extrude cut.
Finally, I extracted the file as DXF then imported it to Laser Works program.
Back part, fully defined
T-slot dimentions
Front part dimentions
Side part dimentions, fully defined, including Arc to be the stand of the mob
Top part with circles and fillet rectangles to put the pencils and the tools inside them
Middle part containing text
Save all components/parts as DXF
The base part which I built on it the rest of the holder, assembled with the front part with a t-slot
The back part
All the three parts assembled
The two side parts. I designed the left part first, then I mirrored the right part
Building the top part and extrude it with the 3 circles and the two side parts to put the objects in it :)
Like me, my wife's name is starting with A. So, I designed the A&A part to finalize the holder
At the begging I checked with the specialist the overall settings to make sure all is well.
after adjusting the measurements.
I adjusting parameters for the cut : properties of speed: 30, and power: 65, Scan: properties of speed: 300, and power: 30.
I saved the file as .rd.
In the laser cutter, I prepared the machine for start working as I put the wooden sheet, placed the origin point and checked the focus and let it work.
I used 3 plywood sheets to implement the holder and this are the laser work sheets and the parameters of them
Bottom and first side parts
Mid, front and top parts
Back and second side parts
Parameters
The multi-functional pencil holder can be for your stationary tools
The multi-functional pencil holder can be your mobile stand and snacks tray in your desk
The multi-functional pencil holder can be for keeping your personal devices in one place
The huge problem was; that I designed the first project like TV, but when I let my instructor to check the design, She told me that the design didn't contain side parts and is a necessary thing to pass the evaluation of the project. I found it will take a long time from me to develop that, because all of that I decided to redesign a new one that I can do all necessary requirements on it in the last time of the week.
Below you will see the first one :) ;)
I realized in this week that I should plan to the time frame of the project, because its very important thing to finish the project on the time with considering the time of dealing with any issues.
I was very exiting from this project. I felt that I get closer more to my final project after finishing the holder project. It was a really fantastic experience . I'm so passionate to move on :)
It was the biggest cardboard project ever - from the begging of the diploma - that we worked on this week. I had million tuns of enjoyment :)
