Spirograph Drawing Toy
We all loved playing with it when we were kids
I picked Spirograph Drawing Toy as a 2D model for the purpose of Laser Cutting because i loved playing with it when i was a kid and it is simple and doesn't consume too much material (single piece mode).

Process Steps of the assignment
A- for 3D printer :
Watch the Video tutorials and Read the Operation Manual: Prusa MK2 3D Printer From maker student portal.
Browse an open source CAD library (Thingiverse) and searched for Gears models and after browsing many models I chose: Geared Heart from ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:662447 )
Download the file in a *.STL format for the purpose of 3D printing.
Download Ultimaker Cura program from maker student portal.
Install the program in my computer.
Open the file (UrbanAtWork_GearHeart_V1_8.STL) in Ultimaker Cura program.
Choose the printer ( PRUSA i3 MK2 ) and the material ( PLA).
Recheck for setting ( profile 0.2 - infill 90% - check support - check adhesion ).
slice the model after slicing the model ( it take time 1h 18 minutes and take 9 gram .
to minimize the time and material i decided to scale down the model to 90% from its original time and slicing again it take 59 minutes and 7 grams) .
Export the file in .gcode format and rename it (Geared_Heart_59min_7gram_PLA_Red.gcode).
Put the file on a Flash memory.

B- for Laser Cutter :
Watch the Video tutorials( Preparing design files using Laser Cutter Software ) and Read the Operation Manual: FLE Laser Cutter From maker student portal.
Browse an open source CAD library (Thingiverse) and searched for Gears models and after browsing many models I chose:.
Spirograph Drawing Toy
Download the file in a *.DXF format for the purpose of Laser Cutting
Download LaserWork v6 program from maker student portal.
Extract the files to new folder and open the program for the first time and insure the program work fine
import the file (Spirograph.dxf) in laser work program.
Edit and delete extra drawing.
I notice that the file contain cut only and no engraving in it so I import another .dxf file ( fab lab logo ) which I can add some engraving and edit it to be beside the spirograph.
Remove the circle around the fab lab logo ( I don’t need it )
Covert the parts of fab lab logo to the red color ( to engrave it )
Edit the the Black layer parameter ( speed 25 mm/s – processing mode : cut – minimum and maximum power 65% )
Edit the the Red layer parameter ( speed 300 mm/s – processing mode : scan – minimum and maximum power 25% )
Add a text ( fab lab ) and rotate it and covert it to red (scan mode)
Save the file in .rld format (Spirograph_fablab.rld).
Put the file on a Flash memory.
Some Images for the steps
1- Press two power switches to turn on the laser cut machine
2- Import my *.rld design to Laser Works program from a flash memory.
3- Insure the diminutions of the design is correct
4- Adjust speed 15 and power 70 for cut and Adjust speed 300 and power 40 for scan
5- look for Preview to insure the design is fine and download the file to the machine and rename it (short name).
6-put a wood sheet and tip it to insure it in a good position.
7-Use the arrow keys to Move the machine head to the top-left corner of the machine and press Origin Button.
8- open my file by press arrow buttons and select memory file tab
9- select the name of my file
10-select Track Frame the machine moved like it’s cutting a rectangular piece of wood that can contain my design size but without emitting a laser.
11- select Working time preview to Calculate the estimated working time for my design.
12- it take 4 min. and 14 second.
13- Close the Laser Cutter lid door. and select run to fabricate.
14- image for the machine working.
15- image for the machine and design after fabrication.
16- first trail ( failed ) because the dimension is not correct.
17- After correcting the dimension and cut the design one more time
18- Tray to use the design for paint some shapes
1- Open my project (*.stl) in the slicer and re-enter the last settings ( Profiles 0.2 and infill 80 ) and Uncheck the support and Adhesion.
2- slice the design in cura program and it will take 1 hour 14 min and 9 gram.
3- Save the file to disk and rename it ( Gear_Heart_1h_14min_9g_PLA_Red ). to export the file in G-code format.
4- insert the memory card in the 3D printer
5- Press the control knob to access the Main Menu. Then Select Print from SD and select my file Name to start printing
In Fabrication Challenge:
When we used the Laser Cutting machine to digitally fabricate Pixelated Super Mario ,we asked Mr. Ibrahim Raafat to help us to Set the right speed and power to cut and engraving multiblade colors as shown in the picture , Thanks for him.
When we used the 3D Printing machine to digitally fabricate T-rex Minifigure and Set the values for Infill, Layer, Height, and Scale to set printing time of 15 minutes maximum, we asked Ms. Amani Ayman if we can scale down the figure and she helped us to choose the best scale .
we used layer height 0.4 not 0.2 to print the largest T-rex in 15 minutes. Ms. Amani said " we never use the Layer height 0.4 in fab lab ". but the T-rex well printed.
When i download and install Ultimaker Cura (4.10.0) i get two problems
Problem No1.
I get this error massage: "Error launching installer".
Solution : I research for this error massage in the internet and find the solution in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZClWjgYPVtE after following the steps the problem solved. Thanks for Technolgy secrets أسرار التكنولوجيا
Problem No2.
i have another error massage " Could not probe OpenGL "
Solution : after i resarch in the internet i found this site https://forum.shotcut.org/t/error-message-install-opengl-2-0-or-higher/4076/2
give me the solution by update my display drivers.: Go to device manager, select the Display adapter and choose Update driver and it solve the proplem and finaly i install the program and it works fine . thanks for Steve_Ledger to help me in this problem.
I'll use the laser cutting machine and 3D printer in my final project.
When i used LaserWork v6 program for creating G-code file for laser cutting machine i companied two .dxf files and edit the lines and insert a text "Fab Lab" to become a new design this I will never forget from this week?.
( Bladeless Airflow Fan - Pet Feeder - RC Car with a Physical Remote Controller )
I and Ms Huda made RC Car with a Physical Remote Controller and it was cool mini-prototype by cardboard
and the other prototypes was very very good especially the Bladeless Airflow Fan made by Michael and Yasser.
