For inspiration, I did Google search using the keywords: pen and pencil holder + 3D Printing.
I picked this pencil holder Because it designed for 3D Printer and Introduce a neat way to hold the Pencils. and it break out of the norm and An effective and unique design that is sure to impress.
I will tray to design this holder by fusion 360 program and fabricate it by 3D Printer.
Software
Program 1:
§ Fusion 360
I used Fusion 360 to design and assemble the parts of Pencil holder and make stl files and f3d files.
Fusion 360
Program 2:
§ Ultimaker Cura (4.10.0)
This software used for slicing 3D object and create G-code file for 3D printer machine
Ultimaker Cura (4.10.0)
Machine :
§ 3D Printer
This machine used to create 3D parts- making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model, typically by laying down many successive thin layers of a material.
PRUSA i3 MK2 3D Printer
Materials :
§ PLA 3D Filament
for used in 3D Printer
PLA+ 3D Filament
Process Steps of the assignment
Watch the Video tutorials in maker diploma student portal.
Open Fusion 360 program and follow the steps :
A- Steps 1-5 : Create Circular Pattern from 9 circuits in xy plane.
B- Step 6-12 : Create offset plane and create another Circular Pattern from 9 circuits in this offset plane.
C- Step 13-15 : from Preference check ( allow 3D sketching of lines ) to draw lines between circuits in the two planes.
D- Step 16-19 : Creating Sweep for the 9 circuits ( profiles ) and its lines (paths) to make 9 joined cylinders.
E- Step 20-21: Shell the faces of all cylinders by 2mm to make Body1.
F- Step 22: Extrude the inside shape from Sketch 1 by 1mm to make body2
G- Step 23-33: Make another 3d model ( a Cup ) in the center of cylinders by drawing a shape and Revolve it ( Body3) then fillet the edges and give the body the appearances and color .
H- Step 34-35: Show the 3 bodies and give it appearance .
I- Step 36-38: Combine the 3 bodies ( cylinders , cup and base ) to make 1 body.
Step 40: Export the model in an *.STL format.
Step 41: Export the model in an *.f3d format.
Step 42: Open the file (Pencil_holder.STL) in Ultimaker Cura program.
Choose the printer ( PRUSA i3 MK2 ) and the material ( PLA).
Recheck for setting ( profile 0.2 - infill 40% - Uncheck support - Uncheck adhesion ).
slice the model after slicing the model ( it take time 4h 44minutes and take 40 gram .
Step 43:
to minimize the time and material i decided to scale down the model to 80% ( profile 0.4 - infill 20% - Uncheck support - Uncheck adhesion ) and slicing again it take 1hour and 26 minutes and 23 grams) .
Export the file in .gcode format and rename it (Geared_Heart_59min_7gram_PLA_Red.gcode).
Put the file on a Flash memory..
Step 44:
Export the file in .gcode format and rename it (Pencil_holder_1h_26min_23g_PLA.gcode) and save the file on a Flash memory..
First try :
1- Open my project (*.stl) in the slicer and re-enter settings scale down 90 % ( Profiles 0.6 and infill 20 ) and Uncheck the support and Adhesion.
2- slice the design in cura program and it will take 1 hour 20min and 31 gram.
3- Save the file to Pencil_holder_1h_20min_31g_PLA.gcode ). to export the file in G-code format.
4- insert the memory card in the 3D printer
5- Press the control knob to access the Main Menu. Then Select Print from SD and select my file Name to start printing
6- After 5 minutes of printing i notice that the printing model have a scratches as shown in the image and after asked Mss Nagla ( fab lab technical ) we decided to stop the printer and we thinned that the problem in layer thikness 0.6 or the temperature .
the printed part in first try
Second try :
1- Open the slicer again and and change the print setting ( printing temperature to 220 and build Plate temperature to 70 )
2- Change the scale down to 80 % and Profiles 0.4 and infill 20 and Slice again and it will take 1h and 23 min and 23 gram.
and save the to disk and reprint the file with the same steps.
3- after few minutes of printing the printer stopped working and give error message
(BED THERMAL RUNAWAY)
the error message
the printed part in second try
Third try :
We decide to change the 3D printer and print again with the same steps and we have the same error again
(BED THERMAL RUNAWAY)
the error message
the printed part in second try
Forth try :
We decide to print one more time with the second 3D printer with the same steps and we have the same error again
(BED THERMAL RUNAWAY)
the error message
the printed part in second try
Fifth and last try :
We decide to change the 3D printer again and print again with the same steps
Finally the third 3D printer worked good and complete printing the Pencil holder model
The printer working
the model after printing
The final Pencil Holder model
a lot of work a lot of help
1- In the fabrication of Pencil Holder by 3D printer
The lap specialist helped me and learnt me how to change the print setting ( printing temperature to 220 and build Plate temperature to 70 ) and give me a lot of help in the 5th trial of printing.
2- In the fabrication of Mobile Holder by laser cutter
the lap specialist helped me and learnt me how to delete one layer from the two layer of cutting before cut the model again to insure the laser cutter cut all parts.
Thanks for her great effort .
3- This week I had a problem in booking a time-slot in Saturday because i travel one time every week from sohag to cairo and i travel in Saturdays but this Saturday was completely booked, but thanks for Mohamed Adel because he cancel his time-slot for me and take another time-slot in another day and i grateful for his help because i completed the fabrication assignment of week2 and week3 before the deadline.
Participate in a pair learning activity to design Ball , Base and Hook Connector parts
we divided in groups of two , my group are me and Mohamed Tarek, one is driver and the second sketched the part, he drive me to sketched the base and i drive him to sketched the ball then i drive him to sketched the Hook Connector .
We was good team and helped each other to finish sketching the three parts in the time.
Thanks for him for his effort and cooperation.
Participate in a pair learning activity to design Model the Head and Torso of the LEGO Minifigure by following the dimensions
we divided in groups of two , my group are me and Nihal Emad
first i drive Nihal to Model the Head
Second Nihal drive me to model the Torso of the LEGO .
third I drive Nihal to Personalize our LEGO Minifigure and give it a face of Woman.
Finally we Assemble the parts using the relevant joints .
This was done with the help of Mss. Amani Ayman and Mr. Ibrahim Raafat many thanks for them.
and Thanks for Nihal Emad for her effort and cooperation.
When i finished documentation of week 3 and publish my page and go to student portal to test preview of my page i have an error massage ( The requested URL was not found on this server ) then i send a message on Slack in community-troubleshooting channel and after a view minutes i had a replay from Yasser Hassan
he learnt me how to fix the problem - then i go to my page and change my name in the publish setting to ( md22w-wagih ) and save it .
and this steps solved the problem and now i can preview my page from student portal .
thanks for Yasser Hassan for his help and his quick replay .
After four failed attempts, the fifth succeeded
When fabricates the pencil holder i tried to print the model 4 times and in the 5th try i succeeded to print it.
Thermal Runaway is configured to shut down the printer when the temperature drops by more than 15 °C for more than 45 seconds. If the temperature reading doesn't recover in the set time period, the printer will shut down and display the Thermal Runaway error.
and there are many solution you can read it in the site :
https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/thermal-runaway-temperature-drops_2131
I'll use fusion 360 program in my final project to design and assemble his part before print it by 3D printer or cut by laser cutter.
2 Weeks in 2 hours
I did the fabrication of 2 assignment
Mobile holder ( week2) and Pencil holder ( week3)
in the same time-slot in 2 hours full of learning and tries and fun.
