Origami pen holder ( paper )
This week the assignment was about making pen holder using Fusion 360 to design and 3D printed to fabricate . First i didn't know what i can do and i didn't like make it looks like cylinder , I wanted to create something unique . As i am an origami artist i searched about pen holders and using the techniques of folding using features in fusion and i saw that will be great to make it 3D printed.
Auto Desk Fusion 360
I used fusion to sketch the 3D design and export stl file that can be sliced for printing.
Ultimaker cura
I used cura to slice the stl file , change settings and export G code file to be read by the 3D printing machine.
PRUSA i3 MK2 3D Printer
I used PRUSA to Fabricate my design.
Material : PLA
I used PLA because it is one of the most environmentally-friendly 3D printing materials .
First : I opened Fusion 360 to sketch my design .
Then the steps is :
1- I choose create new sketch .
2- I draw a square 50*50 mm .
3- I choose offset plate 20 mm distance between them .
4- Then I draw another square by same measurements .
5- I repeat this one time and last thing i draw a square to be in the same direction as the bottom.
6- I connect them using Loft feature.
7- I use shell feature to make hole in my design.
8- I change the appearance using plastic translucent glossy white to make it looks beautiful .
9- Finally choose save as mesh choosing stl.
Note : I put all the process in the right . you can see it by click on it in the right side .
change the setting in ultimaker cura
First : I opened ultimaker cura and open stl file to change the setting to be suitable for the requirement of the assignment :
Then I used :
1- 20% infill.
2- 0.3 layer height.
3- No adhesion or supports.
Last step : I save the file as G-code ( writing the time , grams , material , color , infill and layer height) to be read by the machine.
The process :
1- I transfer my G-code to SD card and put it into the machine.
2- I cleaned 3D printer bed using alcohol.
3- I turned on the 3D printer.
4- I cut off the extra part of the PLA.
6-choose my G-code file.
7- After the bed become pre-heated i watch the first layer to make sure that all things works well.
Finally : It tooks 1h18m and 19g.
My pen holder
I asked my peers and instructors if there's any mistakes or something i missing in my design . Micheal suggest that i need to minimize the thickness because i made it 5 mm and i didn't know that it will not affect my design so i resize it and make it 1.5 mm and it was really nice and didn't take to much from the hole so it makes me put more pens in it .
I also scaled down my pen holder and Amany told me to make the layer height o.3 mm to make it suitable for the time .
5mm
1.5 mm
I found a problem in following the dimensions worksheet to model a 3D design , but in the end of week session when we work as team i understand many ways to read it from my colleague Ayman .
I also faced a problem of finding an idea to make a different design . but after some searches about different designs in 3D printed pen holder . I decided to think and make something related to my hobby (origami) so i searched about pen holders and vases so i found a lot of things that can be suitable for the assignment and easy to make with fusion 360 . What i learned that getting out of the box made me find what i am looking for , so i don't need to follow people minds.
Timer body using 3D printing
I want to make my project by using 3D printed and on this week i learned a lot and it helps me because i don't imagine how it will be but now i find this gonna be easy to sketch my design in paper and use fusion 360 to make it 3D.
The coolest thing this week : That we don't have to draw all the parts of the sketch we can use revolve and i love this feature it save a lot of time. In Hands on mind activity we told to do pen holder using fusion 360 and i don't have any back ground so i searched and found a tutorial but when i try to do it seems so hard then i searched another video and he only draw two lines and Sp-line then revolve it then use shell to make hole then fillet to make edges not sharp and that's it . It can be a pen holder and this take like 5 min to finish this. That was super cool. And As It's the first time i use 3D designs program and make 3D designs . I love how it's easy to make simple things in small time because all of the features very helping to do that.
