Tell us about your assignment's idea for this week. Why do you care about this idea? What inspired you? (Please include images or links to sources of inspiration)
I was inspired by a recently published post from NASA, NASA's James Webb Telescope reveals millions of galaxies
, the deepest infrared view of the universe to date, contains light from galaxies that took billions of years to reach us.
So, I decided to look for designs that integrated with this idea and that I love cats too, This design would help me learn more about the features of the software and be simple to understand the mechanism of machines.
1st for making a wooden coaster, I searched on 3axis.com for a coaster with a cat design and downloaded it as a DXF file
2nd preparing the design:
I used the LaserCad software to prepare my design, measuring the distance of the drawing place to make sure it isn't small& make it at the origin then I set up the settings as we learned in week 0
This design contains the cut and engraving settings
3rd Settings:
Red color: for engraving - speed: 300 - power: 25
Black color: for Cut - speed: 20- power: 70
1st I searched on Thingiverse to get a free astronaut model, I choose it as a one-piece model & I downloaded it as STL file
2nd prepared the design:
I opened it on Ultimaker Cura software to prepare my design, I scaled the design so Z= 5 cm to print it at the required time& gm
I set up the settings as we learned in week 0
3rd Settings: 0.20mm Normal _ Filament: Generic PLA _ Printer: Prusa i3 MK2S _ Infill: 15% _ support: touching build plate _ Adhesion: No, as it contains a sphere with a flat surface
4th preview: to make sure the printing doesn't exceed 90 min and to know the weight
5th preview: I exported the G code file & named it (PI3MK2_astronaut- 8g - white - 52min -0.2mm.gcode )
1- I transfer my G-code to the SD card and put it into the machine.
2- I cleaned the 3D printer using alcohol.
3- I turned on the 3d printer.
4- I wanted to change the filament to a white one:
I unloaded the filament then, we set the filament and go load the filament from the menu,
5- I cut off the extra part of the PLA.
6-Then choose my G-code file.
7- After it becomes pre-heated I waited to make sure that the first layer is good
Finally: It took 52 min with 8gm then I removed the supports
First, I loaded the DXF file to the machine, made sure that the wood board is in the right place, and set the origin point to start cutting from it then, I choose a box to make the framework to make sure that the wood board is enough for the design, and then I choose the file to start cutting process.
finally it took 34 sec
I had a problem with laser cad software, when I installed it appeared with unrecognized language, then I asked a specialize in the lab and she helped me fix this problem by uninstalling it and choosing the English language
SD card wasn't readable on my laptop, the instructor helped me, using USB he put the code file on her laptop and then she put the file in the SD card
I didn't know what the proper paint used to paint Polywood so I sketch using an ink pen
I got to know about laser cutting machines and 3D printing machines, and got familiar with them in the right way, The instructions we should take while fabricating
That could help me a while fabricating the Final Project.
The coolest thing is that turning a simple coaster into an art sketch with simples tools like an ink pen
