Mobile Holder
Mobile Stand
Everyone needs a mobile stand/holder for watching videos or charging the battery. I got inspired from this video.
A Sheet of Wood
Laser Cutting Machine
Screws & nuts are used for assembling the parts of my design
Mobile Stand
I took the measurements of my mobile (width & height). I used cardboard, pencil, rule and cutter to make a low-fidelity prototype of the mobile stand.
Then, I started sketching on Fusion 360 the 5 parts:
Back
Right side
Left side
Front
Top
I made a Sketch for each side of the mobile stand and made sure that it was fully defined and add T-slots to the two sides to make them strong enough to hold the mobile. Secondly, I extruded each side as a component and used joints to assemble it to get a simulation of the mobile stand after fabrication. Then I saved them a .dxf files for laser cutting. I tried to made a 3D phone to add it the the stand.
Back
Front & Back
Side
I saved each sketch on Fusion 360 as dxf files and import them on the LaserCad program to prepare them for the fabrication. Then, I adjusted the power & speed for the cutting part.
I adjusted the nozzle of the laser cutting machine with the focus point and downloaded the file to the machine.
The lab Specialist helped me to move the different part next to each other to save my sheet.
I assembled the parts together but I found out that the front part doesn't support the mobile. The instructor advised me to change the press fit to T-slots.
I redesigned the side and the front parts to add T-Slots to them and the repeated the previous steps again.
I gathered all the parts and got 6 stews and nuts (3mm) and started assembling them togethers. I assembled the right side with back using a strew & nut. Then I did the same with the left side. After that, I assembled the front and the back parts that support the weight of the mobile.
Finally, I tested it by putting my mobile on it. It was great.
Step 3
Mobile Stand after fabrication
The measurements of the back and top part was wrong and I couldn't assemble them with the two sides. I increase its width but in vain. Then, I discovered by chance the measure tool in Fusion which allows me to get the right measurement between the two sides. Then, I sketched the two parts again and assembled them to the rest of the components.
The other challenge is Fusion 360 software which keep glitching on my device and I am still looking for a solution.
After fabricating the mobile stand, I found out the front back is not strong enough to support the mobile. That's why the instructor advised me to add T-slots to the two sides of the mobile stand to make it stronger.
First design with wrong measurements
The press fit techniques won't be the most suitable thing in assembly process. Using T-slots is more reliable especially if this part is holding something somehow heavy.
Making sketching doesn't require certain background. It is not only for engineers. With simple techniques you can make a design.
During the rocking chair activity, I learned how to assemble different components together.
In groups of three, we sketched 3 parts of a rocking chair. There was a challenge in the side part as it has lots of details.
