Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo.
A floral model.
Part 1: 3D Print a model
I browsed Tne of the libraries of open source designs (Thingiverse) and chose a model of a very unique minaret in Islamic architecture, which is the minaret of the Samarra Mosque in Iraq, which dates back to the Abbas Empire in about 851 AD. In Egypt, we have a younger sister to this minaret in the Ahmed Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo, which was built at that time inspired by the beautiful Samarra Mosque.

Part 2: Laser Cut a model of your choice
I browsed through one of the open source design libraries (3axis.co) and chose a model of a symmetric composition of tree leaves and flowers.
It reminds me of the Islamic motifs used in many of old Islamic buildings in old Cairo.
For Printing a 3D model:
- I used internet for get a suitable model.
- I used Ultimaker Cura Software for preperaing my version of the model and export the code suitable for the printer.
- I used Pursa printer in Fab Lab to print my model.
For Cutting a model with laser cutter:
- I used internet for get a suitable model.
- I used LaserWork Software for preperaing my version of the model and export it in a form suitable for the machine.
- I used Laser cutter in Fab Lab to cut my model.

For Printing a 3D model:
- The specialist firstly checked my model and it was about 9 gm and 65 minutes long. he suggested that we can scale it down to zip time. We get a smaller model: 3gm and 35 minutes.
- The file did not need any support but we have to make sure from the temperature to be 215 to suit our chosen material.
- At this point I exported gcode file to the sd card.
- I inserted sd card into the printer and make it selected for printing.
- After 35 minutes I got the minarat between my hands and it was perfect. The minaret said he wish to print it at a bigger scale one day and I hope to get one at a bigger space and at a color near to the real minaret.
For Cutting a model with laser cutter:
- I opened the LDR file with specialist and we make sure of cut power in range between 35 - 75.
- At that point the file is ready for being downloaded to the machine.
- I selected my file from the machine and set the focus and tracked my object to make sure it will done successfully.
- Just 2 minutes and I got my floral piece between my hands and I wish if it could be larger.

The main challenge was how to mange my time in order to prepare the models and went on time to the lab and getting them manufactured.
The main problem that I did not imagine the real size of both 2d and 3d model and when I got them between my hands I felt them smaller than I imagined. Next time I have to imagine them better and I might need help from a prototype model to better fell the size by my hands.
It gets me more familiar with the machines and their processes.
- How it is very interesting to get somthing between your hands and born to reality after your work processes.
- I enjoyed in-lab session and the interacting with our lovely instructors and the work with my colleagues within the group.
